Re: Ultimate Hot Rod: US-Built Scramjet Runs Mach 5 in Testing
The difference between a SCRamjet and a normal Ramjet is a Ramjet has to slow the air down to subsonic speeds before injecting the fuel so it will burn inside the thrust chamber before going out the back. If the airflow goes supersonic you get the combustion outside the jet which is really a flame thrower not an engine. The SC in the SCRamjet stands for Supersonic Combustion and it's a pretty big leap forward but like the article pointed out it had to ride a booster till it could get enough speed through the ramp and chamber to actually work. The real application of this will be what is called a combined cycle engine which will run up to speed then transition into a SCRamjet and keep on going without having to switch engines.
Even I don't understand how the fluid dynamics work inside of this thing to keep the shockwaves and boundary layer effects from breaking up the combustion event into smaller pieces and preventing a good mixture.Central TEXAS Sleeper
