There is a similar crane at LAX right now helping to build the international terminal addition.

The really scary part of that is the new terminal will block the view of the tower of most everything on the other side, like airplanes. The FAA says they can make up the loss of sight by radar and cameras. The last fatal accident at LAX came when the current international terminal blocked the view of the old tower. A British Airways took the tail off a commuter prop plane with people in it. A new tower was built as a result.

If you look carefully at the crane on the right side of the screen, something lets go *just* before the smoke starts to pour out, and a chunk of metal is tossed high into the air. Very high into the air. Like a clutch explosion.

Might it be the gear driven innards of the hoisting drum? I wonder what the rpm at failure was.
