Re: Question of the Day: Have You Ever

Not necessarily suggesting that this is the best use of this unit, but as a kid growing up (around the time of the dinosaurs) the axle tubes from this rear were the standard jackstands found in guys Dad's (or Grandpa's) shops. Unbolt the tube from the center section and torch cut a couple of half-moons for the rear axle to sit in and you're ready to go. They're sturdy and the bells give a pretty good footprint to keep 'em stable. Just a thought..........

Re: Question of the Day: Have You Ever

I was at a car show and talked to a guy who built a ratrod from the cowl of a 29 Ford, and the rear of a 57 Chevy. I was mainly interested in how the body was built and mentioned that I have always wanted a T-Bucket. Ratrod guy tells me he has a 30/31 Ford Model A cowl in his rafters and that building a body is not all that difficult. I took the bait. 3 years later I have it hanging in my shop. I have no intentions of making it a complete car again, now it's shop art.

I took a 75 Buick Century to save it from the local junk yard which is more of a crushing service than anything, rear end wound up in a 63 GMC I built as well as the trans, calipers fit chevy 10 bolt front axles so I saved them, gave the steering column to a buddy who made a hybryd tilt for his 70 Buick. Tried to give away more parts than I take but seldon does anyone want my wierd stuff. Anyone want early small diameter 14 bolt drums and backing plates? Probably not, how about a 24V starter off of an M715...

How about the broken remains of a 55' chevy frame and running gear? It was in about 10 pieces with the largest piece being the front frame stub with the dead stock and complete 55' 265 sbc, and cast iron PG still in it.

I took it home - took stock of it, and gave the front stub to a friend of mine who ended up selling it for $500 and gave me half. The frame rails were trash, and the rear end had some wield old homemade traction bars. Its all sitting in the scrap pile right now.

Re: Question of the Day: Have You Ever

Back on 1970 a College instructor I had needed to get rid of a car from his apartment. He said it wouldn't run. So I grabbed a buddy and a rope and dragged a 1962 Plymouth valiant four door slat six car across town to home. Dad was not happy but I said it followed me home. I grabbed a can of either and shot it in the carb and hit the key. Started right up with a lot of smoke but finally settled down. I washed it hit the old typewriter drive and put it on the street corner. Sold it the next day for 200. Dad just smiled.
              The good old days. ;D ;D ;D

That is a Model A axle, not T.

Dan, we had several sets of those jackstands in our high school auto shop!

How can you tell the difference between the two?

                  Just curious.

                    Model T axle

BTW, I've got vintage Model T and Model A jackstands. They've been jackstands for at least 60 years.

And as for the question of the day . . . that's how I ended up with TWO Rambler Classic Cross Country wagons. (The old man said "Buy'em now or I'm going crush 'em next week.")

Came across an old set of 60's road-race Mustang front disc brakes when I was stationed out in Monterey, a stone's throw from Laguna Seca. I had no use for them in my barracks room, but refused to drop them off at the scrappers or just throw them out. I eventually found a guy that was building/restoring a Shelby and sold them to him for a couple bucks and tour of his shop.

TAfkaS correctly posted a pic of a T rear end.

So naturally, another question comes up.

Is it more BangShifty to make jackstands out of the tubes or give it away?

                          The jackstand idea seems cool!

I'll come get that S.O.B., I'll build a whole Doodle Bug around that rear.

And yes, I've dragged stuff home, to head it off at the pass from being scrapped, just theres some much I can't think just one but, lots of old snow plow parts for sure.

The thing's survived eighty years, so it seems kind of sad to cut'em up.

                              I like the Doodlebug idea.
Almost as good as using them for a ratty A/T Speedster.
