A move from free ticketing would be a mistake.

Getting fans in the seats is probably the toughest challenge in promoting doorslamer racing. Fans in the seats means more sponsor exposure and more "glory" for the racers. There are already plenty of doorslammer events that play to mostly empty stands.

Fans in the seats also help tracks recruit racers for weekly shows and test & tune nights. Fans in the seats also show the non-racing community the popularity of drag racing.

Sure, abandoning free ticketing might temporarily lead to higher purses. But just like raising taxes in the middle of a recession, jacking ticket prices will be counterproductive in the long run.

Speedy, the "free tickets" happened because there was always a series sponsor that paid the purses.

If there's not series sponsor, there's no purse, unless money comes in from somewhere. I'm not sure the sheik (who will be forced to pay out of his own pocket if no one else does) will want to keep that as his business model.
