Re: Sayonara Saleen Mustang - Production to Close This Summer

You realize of course, that in the greater motor-sports world, both the Saleen and Shelby Mustangs are seen as pigs on steroids with lots of lipstick.

In Canada, we can import a 15 year old used cars, the 1996 Nissan Skyline GTR for example, which arrives via gray market direct from Japan, some tuned, some not, with automatic all wheel drive, 4 wheel steering, traction control, launch control in some models, 6 speed manual gearbox or 5 speed automatic paddle shift, for around 12 to 20k depending on state of after-market tune. 500awd hp is not uncommon, 350 is stock, from the turbocharged fuel injected 6 cylinder.

These 15 year old cars will wipe many a v-8 off the road.

I still remember watching the Saleen Mustangs lapping around at Mosport during the SCCA Escort Endurance series 24 hour races in the late 80s ... pretty cool to see all 4 brake rotors glowing at night. They had several wins in that series, loved the look of those cars. The 89 Mustang I have coming will be done as a bit of a tribute to those General Tire sponsored cars.

The only reason these are gray market, is because the steering wheel is on the right, and the headlights don't meet Canadian DOT standards. Also, each car that arrives here requires North American DOT approved tires. Perhaps if we put good quality headlights and new tires in and on those Fords...

We did a lot of extra welding before we put them together...they were pretty durable

Re: Sayonara Saleen Mustang - Production to Close This Summer

Dave, did you work on those cars at the preparatio shop, or at the track? Would you mind if I p.m.'ed you with a few questions? I've already been talking to Kenny Brown's son Paul about them a bit.

With the 89 Mustang I'm getting, I plan to run it in vintage racing up here, they have a category for pre-1990 cars that are prepared to a rule book from back in the day. So I am trying to get as much info about the Saleen race cars as I can.

                    thx,

No problem Ed...I'll tell you everything I can remember. I think Kenny Brown preped the cars in '87. I start there in '88 and left at the end of '89. We built and preped the cars in Livonia, Mi and did all the races.

US crash and emissions standards are another issue. The R33s apparently can get through if you add some extra padding in a few spots. The R32s and R34s, nobody's done the necessary tests to see what it would take.

Unplugging the Super HICAS while you're preparing them to meet US specs would also be a good idea. The rear wheel steering doesn't activate during normal driving, and from what I've heard from racers who push Nissans with that system hard enough to activate it, when it does kick in it usually does more harm than good. Just because the car is loaded with a bunch of high-tech parts doesn't mean the parts actually help performance.

It is kind of sad to see an end to official Saleen Mustangs, but as long as they're still selling the parts to build your own...

this by far the most mentally challenged motorhead post I have ever responded to.... ever.

you do not need a black market tin can to gain power and AWD.
                          2. one could pluck a 50 dollor cast iron v8 out of a snow pile and rip that feminine excuse for lack of safety in half with just decibals.
