Re: eBay Pick of the Week: '59 Buick Wagon

All GM full sized wagons from 1959-1963 where built by hearse conversion companies, which explains the more formal C pillar and rectangular glass vs the more usual sedan like C-pillar and glass found on the latter full sized cars. I nearly bought a '61 Buick LeSabre wagon and chatting it up with the guy discovered the outsourcing.

Sounds like someone made up that factoid....a more likely explanation for the different roofline on the 4dr sedan and the 4dr wagons in 59 is that the sedan roof was severely sloped at the back, and there was no way to make the wagon look right using sedan doors.

There were way too many GM wagons made at that time to farm out all the bodies to conversion companies!

Besides that, the wagon parts all show up in the Chevy parts book...that would not be the case if the body was a conversion

I worked in the Buick dealership from mid-63 until '70 (off and on). I'm pretty sure David is right on this one. I remember getting one in with (I think it was) "Superior Coach" on the kick plates instead of "Fisher Body". They were SOB's to order body parts for, especially trim bits (side chrome and the like). They also had plates riveted in the door pillar with the body company info, just like ambulances, hearses, and flower cars (cool pick ups).

I had never given much thought to wagons before, but after seeing them on this site the potential is pretty awesome. Certainly would be a much cooler way to ferry the kids to school, movies, etc. than the SUV I'm driving.

I got a kick out of a Buick Invicta wagon I saw at the Power Tour this year! Those things are cool.

Ok, we're both right....some GM wagon bodies from that era were made by Iona, most were made by Fisher.

The '62 Invicta wagon I had last year had Ionia Body tags on it.

The eBay '59 just hit $1275, which is $75 more than mine sold for. Reserve not yet met.

That's only because this car has the dealer installed tissue dispenser.
