Re: Gearhead Guys You Should Know: George Hurst
Another great story, Brian. Jaws of Life, who would have known? :o
My Bug actually has a neat vintage Hurst shifter with a big reverse lockout trigger, was in the car when I got it. I had the exact unit in the 72 Super I owned about 25 years ago.
cheers

Re: Gearhead Guys You Should Know: George Hurst
Great story Brian. I had read George was pretty distraught after losing his company and probably had a lot to do with his passing at age 59. I know I used many Hurst items over the years and they were all quality products. Thanks George, and may you rest in peace.

Re: Gearhead Guys You Should Know: George Hurst
My first Hurst shifter.......
I've mentioned Duane Meulling on here before. He was a Pontiac racer who lived in Milford, MI and worked for Pontiac at the Proving Grounds. His wife had a '59 Catalina (black 2 door HT) with a 3 speed. It had a flat handled Hurst - the handle was shaped sort of like an upside-down "!". The "period" at the end was about 2" in diameter and had 2 orange discs of plastic fastened thru the center of the period to hold them on, making a sandwich of a plastic disc, the flat handle, then another plastic disc. As a 13 year old, it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen - and I've never seen another one. Does anyone know if this was a standard thing or maybe something Duane had made?
My early Hurst memories.
Dan

Wanting to replace the crappy stock floor shifeter in my '85 Camaro....and you can bet yer ass I'm eyeballing a Hurst.
Only aftermarket shifter my father will ever buy.....still remember the day he cut the trans tunnel to install the 3-speed in his Chevelle.......big chromed Hurst stick, with a red "H" under the chrome cut-out on the boot.
