Another great story, Brian. Jaws of Life, who would have known? :o

My Bug actually has a neat vintage Hurst shifter with a big reverse lockout trigger, was in the car when I got it. I had the exact unit in the 72 Super I owned about 25 years ago.

Great story Brian. I had read George was pretty distraught after losing his company and probably had a lot to do with his passing at age 59. I know I used many Hurst items over the years and they were all quality products. Thanks George, and may you rest in peace.

Yep. Fireman refer to it as "the Hurst".

This is a gearhead guy that everyone should know. He lived the American dream.

          My first Hurst shifter.......

I've mentioned Duane Meulling on here before. He was a Pontiac racer who lived in Milford, MI and worked for Pontiac at the Proving Grounds. His wife had a '59 Catalina (black 2 door HT) with a 3 speed. It had a flat handled Hurst - the handle was shaped sort of like an upside-down "!". The "period" at the end was about 2" in diameter and had 2 orange discs of plastic fastened thru the center of the period to hold them on, making a sandwich of a plastic disc, the flat handle, then another plastic disc. As a 13 year old, it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen - and I've never seen another one. Does anyone know if this was a standard thing or maybe something Duane had made?

          My early Hurst memories.

          Dan

Three reasons the man should be made a saint- no more missed shifts in a stick car - jaws of life - LINDA VAUGHN!!!!!!!!!! [maybe not in that order]. Wasn't Linda "plan B" in Gumball Rally?

thanks Brian, I read once before that one of Mr.Hurst's acts was getting the name "jaws of life" changed back to the original name "the Hurst Rescue Tool. "
I have some neat Hurst stuff, from visitor passes and business cards from the Warrminster plant to a HURST AID sticker along with a blank prescription card . Does anybody knows what Im talking about ?

yep, it is one of my prize possessions. Haven't seen another, except for on old race footage. ( along with my motion chevy book with price list!) I have a video that shows the clinic at the nationals at Indy.

I recently installed my first Hurst shifter. 3 speed Master Shift in a 77 Chevy pickup. I've driven them before, never installed one. Sure is fun chirping tires in a six cylinder pickup. Even a 3 speed unit is built like a tank.

Wanting to replace the crappy stock floor shifeter in my '85 Camaro....and you can bet yer ass I'm eyeballing a Hurst.

Only aftermarket shifter my father will ever buy.....still remember the day he cut the trans tunnel to install the 3-speed in his Chevelle.......big chromed Hurst stick, with a red "H" under the chrome cut-out on the boot.
