Re: Video of the Week: Formula One Warmup

I wonder how long those headers last....I can't imagine they last too long with all that heat.

    One Race Maybe?

Yesterday the guys at ARP told us that there's an F1 team that spends well over a quarter million dollars a year just on fasteners.

Hmmm... wonder if there's a place that sells "timed out" F1 parts, like Muscle Motor sell timed out NASCAR cup parts.

F1 cars are amazing to hear in person. I remember going to the Montreal race for the first time in the early 90s, with some friends who were running in one of the support races. We were just driving on to the island where the park and racetrack is, and I was thinking "what the hell is that noise"? Realized it was the F1 cars out for practice. They just absolutely shriek. Think of Indy cars, and then add about 75% more RPM.

Inconel tubing on the headers. They will last a while. Thats NASA engine thruster material. The cost on those headers are in tens of thousands of dollars. Much like a top fuel car they create downforce due to the extreme exhaust energy.

And thats an Arrows Team car.

They are even more incredible, to see how they do what they do.
The amount of downforce, and grip is just astounding.
And they make incredible power at astronoical rpm.
                WOW!

A few years ago we needed some 3" iconel tubing for our exhaust. It cost $60 a foot.

I'm gonna speculate that the car was still in "warmup enrichment" mode because no matter the coating, that's more exhaust heat than F1 cars run during a race...

Yup, there is a footbridge that goes over part of the track where the cars come by at around 180 mph. There is enough air coming off the rear wing to shake the bridge, even when it has 100 people standing on it.

That was my thought as well.....We used Inconel extensively on the Submarine, but even it has heat up and cool down rates that can not be exceeded without brittle fracture occurring.
