  • Silver State Challenge Sunday May 18th

I volunteer to sit at a dirt road and watch the cars fly by at over 100mph (rare few pushing 200mph :o)) here is the ad they run locally for anyone interested. Saturday the cars gather for Tech, kind of like a car show and also they have a standing mile run at ~6500' elevation for registered cars. Here is the official link listing the events and times: http://www.silverstateclassic.com/31...escription.htm

The Silver State Classic Challenge (SSCC) is a non-profit corporation that conducts open road races two times a year, every May & September. Now in our 21st Year, we are the oldest open road event in America with participants from all over the world. The SSCC currently holds two records in the Guinness World Book of Records! The events are held on 90 miles of Nevada Highway 318, between Lund and Hiko, on the way south to Las Vegas, Nevada. The only way to watch these exciting events is to be a Course Worker. There are no spectator areas. We need to have approximately 90 course workers to secure gates along Hwy. 318.

Manning the gates along Highway 318 is the biggest volunteer effort in making these events a success. One of the course workers responsibilities is locking gates that cannot be physically manned, however, the primary responsibility of being a gate course worker is controlling access through the gate that you are manning, and staying at your gate until the event is officially over. No one can use the highway until the event is officially finished and the road reopened by the Event Director. This notification is transmitted to course workers by radio communication.

On Saturday (the day before the event) there are Mandatory Course Worker Orientation meetings at the Bristlecone Convention Center in Ely, Nevada! Returning Course Workers meet at 10 A.M – First timers meet at 11 A.M. Here you will receive Instructions as to how to use radios, the gates that are to be assigned, as well as if you are going to be required to lock a gate. Plan to spend about 1½ hours at orientation for instructions on responsibilities, verifying gate assignments and signing necessary waiver forms.

Race Day! On Sunday morning, course workers check in at Whipple’s Store located in Lund, Nevada starting at 4:00 A.M. You must be in place at your assigned gates by 6:30 A.M. When you check in you will be issued a radio, binoculars and any necessary locks and chains to lock other gates that may be near the gate to which you are assigned.

Each course worker will receive Two Event T-Shirts, one SSCC Hat, Two Bottles of Water and $20.00. (A check for $20.00 will be sent after return of all equipment to the SSCC as instructed.) Each course worker is welcome to participate in all Event Activities, including the Press Luncheon in Las Vegas, the Caravan from Las Vegas to Ely, Cocktail Party, Parade of Cars, Welcome Reception, Awards Banquet, and any other events. However, there is a minimal cover charge for the Awards Banquet.

Without course workers and volunteers these Events on Highway 318 will not happen. We hope that you might pass along the word that volunteer help is always needed and very much appreciated. Without the many course volunteers who enjoy this kind of event, the SSCC would not be the success it is today!

You can sign up on our website www.sscc.us or contact our Course Worker Coordinators, Beverly Cornutt (775) 289-4252 or email [email protected] OR Kelly Brown at [email protected]. The SSCC can be reached (702) 631-6166 or [email protected].
Please help us as we continue to support your communities!

Ran into Miles Cook and Rob Kinnan last night, very cool. Time to go out and look at the cars gathering for Tech.

Haven't heard from Kinnan. Did he barrel roll the thing, or what?
