  • Speed Week 2008

I'm really set on making the trip to Bonneville and attend Speed Week 2008 next August.
I'll be leaving from SW Ohio and driving my hope-to-be-soon completed ’30 Ford roadster. It's a 1,750-mile journey.
I need advise from anyone that has made a long journey to the Flats. I read where motel and hotel rooms are going fast. Are there advantages in becoming a member of the BNI? Give me an idea of what to do & expect so I don't look like a total dork.

Hotels are a probem. Most don't take reservations until Jan 1 (next week), so call fast. You can stay in SLC or Wells, abiut 2 hours away, or you can actually camp out at a place on the Salt Flats called the Bend in the Road.

As a spectator you can just show up, pay $20 for a hat pin, and watch all week. You don't have to join the BNI. Take the money yu save and drop it off at the Save The Salt trailer.

Talk to everyone you can and they will welcome you, educate you, feed you, and put you to work. Your life will be ruined like the rest of us.

Ditto.... except... you can leave the nice car at home and bring a Clunker... no one will care... and honestly... if you take something nice your going to trash it ... ( I promise you will destroy it ... Okay one more time ,... it will be JUNK )

Just something to think about ...

At Maxton I was helping someone who had been to Bonneville last year. He pulled out some wrenches that looked like something his grandfather had given him (and not taken care of very well - You know like the old wrenches you expect to see in the back of a farm truck). I asked him about the tools - He said they were brand new when he went to bonneville - He had forgot to clean them up untill he got home. As he put it - Lesson number 1 - Salt gets on everything!!!! Even if you can't see it, it is there.

I have been, this year's 17 day cross country adventure to Meca can be read here starting with Day 8 (first day on the Salt)
Day 1 Friday Night, Livonia, MI to Chicago, IL Day 2 Saturday, Chicago, IL to Omaha, NE Day 3 Sunday, Omaha, NE to ColoRODo Springs, CO Day 4...

You need to be prepared to blow you car apart afterwards and clean like you've never cleaned before. and when I mean blow your car apart I mean fenders come off, everything comes off and is washed. So far so good for me. Also, I use a product called Salt-A-Way before and afterwards once home.

I do have my room already for next year. I booked it during Speed Week this year. The place is sold out already BUT the casinos will be opening up ALOT of rooms soon. The Nuggert would be my second choice as that is where everyone hangs out at night.

The old salt dogs call it "Bonneville Loctite".

Do NOT under any circumstances let the car rental company know you are going to the Salt. If they find out they will not rent you a car, seriously. In fact, when calling up to to reserve the car casually mention that your coming into town for a wedding or something like that. ALSO, make sure you wash it real good before taking it back to them so there are no visable signs that you were on the Salt. Duct tape plastic or towels onto the carpet.

                      Here's a good link to hotel/motel info

For those driving from the East and passing thru Lincoln, NE, a must stop is the Speedway Museum.
The Museum of American is dedicated to honor and preserve American hot rod and racing history and inspire the automotive ingenuity and enthusiasm of future generations.

Not sure what night it's going to be on in 2008 BUT the HopUp BBQ that is normally on that Monday evening at the bend in the road, is a not to be missed part of Speed Week and open to everyone.

Also, if you do camp at the bend in the road (free), there are showers at the truckstop back at the highway about 1 mile. There are no facilities what so ever at the bend in the road.

Not too sure why you would want to wear heavy, hot boots, but to each his own. Flip flops or sandels work out well and like you have already mentioned plenty of sunscreen....even on the parts that don't show. If you wear shorts, make sure you put sunscreen on all the way up your legs, including the "special parts" if you don't wear tighty-whities. If you need help with this part, just let me know. ;) Make sure you pay special attention to the tops of your feet, your ears and the bottom of your nose and chin. The sun reflects UP from the salt.

The three inches of salt stuck to the undercarriage will probably be the biggest giveaway.

A lot of car rental co.'s have gps locator's on their cars now and have fined others who went to the salt. Just take care of the car and return it in good shape will help.

You will never see or do anything like Bonneville....

I will be returning the rental in las vegas, the following week, after hitting bryce canyon, the G/C and doing the Damn tour . The wife wanted to know what rental car class has soft records. She said she will have to drive, since she is lighter and it will go faster.

We decided to fly out this year instead of driving in my hot rod. Being a salt virgin, I decided to make this 1st trip easy on me and her. The wife was on- line and on the phone a long time to get a place to stay. Got room reservations by the SLC airport. Can't get out there until Wednesday, the 20th, and stay 'till it ends. We're both pumped!
