For some unknown reason Win 8.1 has turned into an update nightmare. When setting up from scratch it seems like 8 needs more updates than 7, well over 100 already. Hopefully 10 will fix some of this. It will be another free upgrade and will not check for legitimate activation of the previous version. Everybody likes to push out updates to their software, check out Android where all the APPs constantly update.

Two possibilities. Leave the computer on overnight, particularly on Mondays. Microsoft has "Patch Tuesday" and starts at midnight. Or go into update settings and switch to notify only. Then you can manually start the updates during a slower time or after you are finished.

        More like fApple!

Apple, iUsers, and Mac people in general tend to be the biggest bunch of smug elitist product consumers on the planet.
Macs have their purpose. Digital Audio Workstations like logic and pro-tools are very good studio programs, some of the best in the business.
Apple claims solid reliablity, no viruses etc, but their product is proprietary, and if they let you know what really gets into your Mac it would make your head spin.
You spend $2k-$4k for $500-$1k worth a wIntel hardware, pay to upgrade the product, and use an OS that borrows from a certain 'open source' kernal? No thanks!

I agree Windows does suck. Windows 8 is the modern Vista except worse.
That's probably why MS is offering Win 8 users a free Win 10 upgrade.
I use Win 7 Pro 64 bit on 3 out of 5 PC's with no problems.

The best OS in my opinion? Linux
I've used Ubuntu 32/64 bit, Mint 32/64 bit, and straight up Debian 64 bit. Linux will run on any computer (Mac or PC), with new/old, good/bad hardware.
I've run Linux on computers with bad RAM, hard drives, faulty/failing motherboards. You won't get viruses. You can boot it from a flash drive, CD/DVD.
You can dual boot Windows/Linux, and run Windows apps in a vitual machine. I've pulled PC's out of dumpsters, put Linux on them and gave them to people.
The majority of the dumpster PC's are still in use today. Oh and the best part of Linux, it's free. The Linux community has come a long way, think Andriod..

The only problem I've had with Linux (and things may well have changed in the 10 years since I last tried it) is that you have to relearn how to do almost everything that you are accustomed to doing on the commercial OSs.

heh...Apple is even better at capitalism than Microsoft.

You can set the time for updates, but if it's a work computer, you probably don't want to leave it running overnight? Maybe set it for lunch time

Apple is communist - they tell you what you can do with your computer, and arrest you if you don't.

I dunno, for me rocking Linux would be like hot rodding an AMC or Buick. Sure you can still be fast, but one of the cool kids? Apple works because of restricted hardware. Windows works because of flexibility in hardware and it's massive driver library. Linux still has occaisional driver and hardware incompatibility problems. Linux should have happened the way Android has. Google gave Android away free so you could get an Android phone or tablet $50 cheaper than a Windows one and OnMyF**ingGod knows how much cheaper than an Apple one. Windows is now free to manufacturers so it is catching up in the mobile market. What would have happened if there were $50 cheaper Linux laptops and desktops than Windows ones? We'll never know now. To get a Linux computer you either need to take Windows OFF, have Windows DIE on you or build one yourself. Not many average Joes up for that.

Hey Whitey? Smug eltiist, maybe.... How often have you replaced your Apple entirely to keep up?

Had Apples since 1984 or so. NEVER had a screen lock up (though sometimes websites do), never had a virus - the darn things just work. And they've never told me what I can do with my computer and they've never arrested me. My oldest bro, who is amazingly tight with a $, finally got tired of messing with the MS junk and came over to the light a couple of years ago - another satisfied MAC user. Oh, and MACs have used LINUX as their core for a number of years. This was annoying at the time as all my old software was useless but there had to be SOME pain in the switchover.

Once I got my iphone, I was hooked...
Then when I got my iPad, the desk top has not been on..
                      So much easier!

So.....What some are saying is Microsoft sucks because it's not Apple?

Regardless, I'm a gamer. I would prefer DOS still be in use but tolerate Windows because it IS the de facto standard. I even use IE because ONE web page loading funny because of my browser choice would be one too many. Neanderthal of me, huh?

PS A Crescent Wrench WORKS. Any size bolt, metric or sae. Won't slip off as easily as pliers. Simple, just one tool to clean up and put away. Windows and Android do the things *I* want. Sometimes it's a hassle, but never an impossibility.

I think you mean that Apple is authoritarian.
