Why is it such a crappy, malfuntioning mess?

Hell, as of just a minute ago, I couldn't sign in, it tells me my login info is wrong.

It's not, it's just a piece of crap. Why is it so bad?

I signed up there yesterday to get info on the power tour and as yet have only been able to make about 6 posts. I constantly get 404 messages and long page loads. I admin on 5 other car forums and we dont have anything like that. Users wont hang around on a site they cant use

As an Information Technology nerd with some experience in marketing, sales, and some other relevant areas, I'll tell you why I think it's bad:

Overconfident web application programmers met up with aggressive marketers and naive business owners at the same time. It's like "The Perfect Storm" on the internet!

From the outside it appears as though someone thought they could build a web forum that "sorta" works like all the others out there, but delivers 100x more advertising content, with greatest priority on the advertising... so what you end up with, is a forum that lacks a lot of standard features you're accustomed to (the PHP stuff, like the CarJunkie Forums) whilst cramming enough advertising into your home to make a cable modem go up in smoke...

ever tried using the HRM forums if you have a dialup modem? :

And apparently, the people who care most (DF, RK, Chris Campbell) can't get the people in charge of the web stuff to understand that it sucks. Clearly the marketing people there aren't following up on things because the stats have told the story for a long time there.

        Don't I know?

I'm one of the Moderator's at Hot Rod's Forum.

We had a huge number of regular users, and we all kept in contact, it was a happy place to be.

Then, we hear about a new forum coming, was supposed to be a great leap for posting pics and such. Turned out it was all for advertising Viagra, and shrinking the usable space. Posting pic's still sucks, and the place runs like an old Renault Alliance, barley sputtering alive, then dead-locked up, wiring burning up like a campfire.

        Doesn't make any sense.
The readers are those same people, doesn't that matter?

We run vbulletin on the forums i admin, why would you want to try and write your own when there are off the shelf applications available that work so well.

              What's the cost difference between

              an "El Budget-O" messageboard

              and a top-of-the-line vBulletin?

What is the "Big Kahuna" software for forums...

the "MacDaddy" w/the best pic-posting capabilities...

              easy-loading, user-friendly, w/easy upgradeability? ??? 8) ???

                  Re: Hot Rod's Forum

Costs for Vbulletin are about $150 to buy the license with 1 years support, we lease the license and it costs us $79 per year per forum. Something like phpbb is free as for a bespoke platform just start adding zeros

                      Re: Hot Rod's Forum

There used to be a restaurant chain in the midwest called "Bill Knapp's". They catered to the 40 and up crowd, with tasty but reliable food and a nice family atmosphere. So why do I bring this up? They hired an outside consulting firm and changed formats, with video games in the lobby and rap on the overhead speakers. In 6 months, they were out of business after like 50 years of success.

Like Bill Knapp's, Hot rod, at least on the forums, has forgotten who their audience is - that is, who pays the bills. The mag will likely live on, but the forum will die and someone will have to decide to either kiss of the web presence (NOT a smart idea) or they'll have to boot the current online staff and start over. Either way, the price has already been too great. Luckily, we got David and Chad out of the deal, and hopefully, much more to come.

                      Later

Are there any HR forum regulars who have not made their way over here?

Should we start a Power Tour section here?

A large number have come aboard here from the HR forum. Most of us just go back for the Power Tour section. Of course their forum has been down since yesterday.

                              Start the Powertour section

I've all but completely left the Hot Rod board, its just too clunky even for the powertour stuff. Thank goodness Spidey hasn't made it over though.
