  • Thinking about building the kids a go kart.. FINISHED!

    Any input?

    Basic idea:

    2 seat
    1 wheel drive
    5hp Briggs
    bare bones

I think I have enough metal to build the frame and am thinking of making the pedals adjustable.

Don't think about it, just do it (and post pics of the project as you go along).
My Mom wouldn't let us have a Go-kart or a Mini-bike when we were kids ...

I am planning on one also. I settled on a two seater, 6.5 hp (powermaxx), 1 wheel drive till they get the hang of it, then go to a live axle. I insist on some type of side protection (rollcage/bar) and belts. Check this place out http://www.mfgsupply.com/GoMini.html...on_id=Xr7YwPxX. Also do a google search for gocart plans, lots are free and there are tons of design ideas out there.

I have been getting ideas on the forum at diygokarts.com. There's some scary stuff over there. :o

We got a go cart from a friend that was homemade or modified or something...the Ackerman steering was set up backwards, the first time my son took of in it was hilarious, at least he didnt' get hurt

Fortunately he couldn't keep the motor running very long

oh, the things I envisioned when I read that BBR wants to build a go kart.

            5hp Briggs... (EFI making 37hp)

Kids should have go-karts, I grew up with one Grandpa built. Just keep the HP low.

I agree... I think the fact that I grew up with go karts and mini bikes (that my dad made me keep running myself, but he would help me if I got stuck on an issue that was over my head) helped me learn how to be safer when driving actual cars later in life...

Just keep an eye towards the future with the build. When they prove themselves capable/responsible with the basic cart, build it so it's easily upgraded to meet their skill level......

I've been having a hard time with "project scope creep". I keep thinking some sort of suspension would be nice.

Re: Thinking about building the kids a go kart

I grew up in a subdivision - no place to ride such a thing - my parents were non negotiable on that point.... but that didn't keep me from taking apart the lawn mower!

I've already told Rhonda that if we have kids - and they have any interest at all - we'll be all into the mini dragsters!

If you've got a place for them to ride it - a gokart is a wonderful thing!

Wouldn't an adjustable seat be easier than adjustable pedals?
There's always something new to learn.

make it all wheel drive and teach them the right way (oh wait you prob dont like imports lol) still go awd that way you can swap big tires on it and tak it off road.

I was going to build a go kart once. The engine I had was a 16 hp briggs. Dad wouldn't let me. I wonder why......
