  • Cool Guy at Advance

was at AZ ordering a new coolant temperature sensor, and buying an oil filter, guy behind the counter, Jake, asked me "Hows your AMC coming"
    I siad"She's parked outside"
we talked about that for a little, and I mentioned I want to sand and paint the wheels satin black, he said if I can get the wheels to his house, he'd sand blast them for free. As we were leaving he said to my dad "I'm an AMC Freak"
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

Every now and then they'll have one of those...

Hey, companies are made of people. The guy behind the counter could be you or me, if we needed a job bad enough.

Cool deal on the rims, sand blasters are awesome. I feel your AMC pain, no one gets Geologist's and their rocks either :P

That's ok, two days ago the guy at Autozone asked me if I needed any Fuel Injection Cleaner for the injectors in my Carburetor : All I could stutter was a
      "Huh??"
"Yeah, to keep the injectors clean in your carburetor"
      "Uh...my Carburetor doesn't have injectors...."
"Yeah, inside of the carburetor there are injectors"
      "Huh, it's a carb-ur-etor........."
      "Yeah the inject......Oh"

Then it hits him, and the other cashier is laughing his ass off saying he's not going to let him live that one down, saying how sad it was that my cashier is in UTI and kept insisting that the carburetor had injectors. I agreed, give that guy crap all week for that mistake.
      Escaped on a technicality.

That's the guy you call and ask about blinker fluid, muffler bearings, pressure plate for a 75 Coupe DeVille, radiator cap for a 68 Volkswagen Beetle, etc.

I used to call other autozone stores when I worked there asking for a Distributor Cap for a 6.2L Chevy engine.... Can't find it? How about spark plugs? ;D

Advance is the place to go in Cadillac. I called once up to advance for a wheel cylinder, and the guy I could get it if I came in and paid that night. Then he came back and asked- "Hey are you the little guy with the old red and white Escort the goes to career tech?" I said yes, and he said "It'll be here in the morning, you can come in then". Cool guy.

I went to a autozone once for spark plugs for our race car. I gave the guy the number of the plug I wanted, and he asked me what kind of car it was for. I told him it wouldn't help and again gave him the plug number. He insisted on looking it up by vehicle, so I played along. Type of vehicle- 1970 Opel Gt. He punched that in then asked me which motor, and just looked at me confused when I told him a 468 big block Chevy. Needless to say he didn't end up finding the plugs.

                Re: Cool Guy at Advance

Auto Zone shoppers aren't much smarter at times, more than once I've heard stories of people asking for a "710"(OIL) cap for their engine and more than one counter guy racking his brain looking. We use to have a National Auto in the 80's, before their were bought out, they had a good supply of hi-po stuff but, man did the guys that worked there think highly of them selfs and their cars. We use to call for coolent parts for Corvairs all the time. "nope, not available" was the answer most of the time.

Thats why I set up cash accounts at both Napa & Carquest. They both have oldtimer parts counter guys that know how to use the books. AZ/Checker/Advance are only used when they have oil on sale.

Napa if I go by it, O'Riellys if I'm not. Advance or Autozone if I want super common get anywhere stuff and they do better at getting special order items in quickly. Autozone has the rewards thing and I buy lots of brake clean, rags, oil and filters, and random parts to build that up every 6months to $20 in free goodies, last time that paid for a throttle cable. This time it's going to be fluids for getting the Riviera started this weekend.

Not to bag on AMC (even though they did post once in a blue moon in the late 60s within SCCA). Yet, I've never met a hard core fan. Hmmm.
