Editorial: Fake news has been going for years. During the 70's, a girl I had gone to school with went to college in France for one year. Her parents were shocked to see her one night on ABC at a student protest against US policies. They called her later to ream her out, and she said "Oh, daddy - I was a paid extra in a movie". Fake news back then, when there were only 3 TV stations - no Fox, no Rush, no conservative internet sources.

That's quite a story - and chances are they'd be more likely to get busted if they tried that today thanks to social media and more competition.

Of course, there's an even earlier alleged fake news quote that comes to mind: "You furnish the pictures, and I'll furnish the war."
