  • West Coast Cruising.........?

Well we're freezing our buns off here in the Midwest and can't wait for cruising season to start.
Several of us old geezers were hanging out today and the subject of West Coast Cruising came up.
We hear a lot about car cruises out West at doughnut shops that start early in the morning.
All of ours here normally are once a month, usually a McDonalds, and go from 6-10 in the evening.
We'd really like to start one that would begin in the AM.......we'd even would call it West Coast Cruising
So clue me in here ..........how is it on the West Coast?

We need a Californian to chime in here and tell us all about it but I did take my car out to cruise California in January of 06. I hit the Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach Saturday morning at 5:00, slept through Saturday afternoon and evening (I'd been awake since Wednesday morning) so I missed a Saturday afternoon car show and Saturday night cruising and I'm not sure what else, then I went to 3 car shows on Sunday in Irvine, Perris and then Rancho Cucamonga and they claim that's their dead season!

Most the cruises here are put on by car clubs........we're thinking of starting something by word of mouth.
Would like to have place that would let us use their lot and as word got out hopefully the event would grow.
I think the Donut Derelicts is what got some of us going on the idea.

                        Re: West Coast Cruising.........?

Cruising is really a misnomer. Cruise in is more like it. People go to these shows and park, then hang out. There's really no cruising around Bob's Big Boy in Burbank on Friday nights. Just a bunch of guys and gals parking and hanging. The brave one's eat at Bob's.

The days of cruising along Van Nuys Blvd are long gone. I used to cruise West Dodge Rd in Omaha back in the 80's. I'm sure it's gone as well.

Today, while driving around LA; I saw dozens of guys out in their rods, customs and muscle cars. I wonder if Pomona swap meet was today. GNRS isn't until next weekend. Maybe these guys just pulled their cars because it was nice and sunny today.

Cruisers Car Wash over in Reseda in the Valley used to host a Friday night show that was patronized by a lot of street racers. They would cruise up and down Tampa Ave and race too. That was five, six years ago. I hear Cruiser's was trying to get their Friday night show going again.

we're thinking of starting something by word of mouth.
That's how most of them started. All day cruises sound great. I'd love to be able to take my car out for even 6 months of the year but we only get about 4or maybe 5 with a good summer.
I go to Kenosha, WI for the big AMC events (once every 3 or 4 years) and they have a cruise every night of the week when the show is in town. They start around 4 and run til about 10. A few years back the kenosha cops were even letting guys do big smoky burn outs in the streets. Cars lined up 10 to 15 deep on one of the side streets.

I don't think I really want to hear about how warm it is in the SW. I am freezing my Mc-nuggets off here in the NE. I've been working on my SC/360 Hornet in an un-heated garage. Yesterday when it was 10 degrees, I thought it wasn't really that bad in the garage.

Lets see, anyone know the proper reducer to paint ratio to paint in 10 degree weather?..... ;D

Yeah you're correct.......the actually 'cruising' happens after the event.
I like the cruise in as opposed to a car show.......which takes all day.
At a cruise in you usually go for about 4-5 hours, hang out..bench race and leave........we're trying to get one started in the AM.
Us old geezers get up early anyway.....I'm usually up at 5 AM (the old bladder won't let me sleep any later ;D) so an early cruise in makes sense.
Back in the 80's our area was listed at one of the top 10 places to cruise in the US.....locals took care of that.
With today's economy and Walmart shutting down main street, I think the local chamber would love to see some traffic again.
