    Ours was like that (not as bad) a couple years ago (brand new house we'd just moved into) and we got a mesh screen that keeps the bigger pieces out and is easy to remove and wash clean.

    Something like this in a big sheet - cut to size and wrap around the whole unit - comes with 4 small bungee cords - Johnstone Supply is where we got it. You can also brush it off with a shoe brush occasionally or spray it.

      Yeah , going to have to put some kind of spring as round it . That took 45 min to get the side cover off , cleaned out and put back together .
