I think it has to do with how many posts you have made. As I've been on since day one and respond to anything that I have input on, I've done a bunch of posts and my status has changed as I went along. I also try NOT to respond if I don't have input (or at least a smart-ass comment) so I don't just clutter up the board. Some guys on other boards have tried to reach some number of posts (like 1,000, or even 10,000), but I don't see that as a goal.
