  • Chevy follows Ford's lead...

I think a lot of us were surprised when Ford announced it was going to discontinue its sedan lines. I just heard that Chevy is going to do the same thing. Their Cruise, Volt and Impala lines are scheduled to disappear. Several plants will also be closed down and naturally the loss of a lot of jobs follows.

I knew Lordstown's day were numbered when they dropped a shift a while back. Sad to see, but expected.

yet still... I wonder what the net will be once they hire back for the plants that are producing electric cars...at this point, it's an 8000 job loss (net), which is a drop in the bucket in the overall scheme of things.... and this is a great time to be looking for a job - especially factory jobs.

Thought I read them thinking of pulling the plug on many of their cars over a year ago.
So this should not be a shock.
Suv's killed the wagon and crossovers are killing the sedan.
Problem I see is if fuel cost go up, or a refinery goes down and fuel supply chain is limited.

That's the first I've heard of it. So in turn Chevy will continue with the Corvette and all the rest, like Ford with the Mustang and all the rest?

And the loss of 8000 jobs is exactly that, the loss of 8000 jobs. Especially if you're one of those 8000. It for sure happened to me, but at my stage in life it was the greatest thing ever. Okay, you are TELLING me "I quit." I just feel for all the younger bucks. The company I worked for fired everybody I had ever helped to hire in quite a few years, and then some. It sucks when jobs go away. It's not the end of the world, but it's something I never had to go through until I was just about through anyhow. They made the decision for me.

8000 jobs, is not a small # but much less than lowes that is closing 51 stores by feb. 2019.
Guess the lack of people double downing on debt for home improvements they don't really need has come to a stop.

Union factory jobs, shouldn't have to worry about finding another one. When Phillip-Morris moved out of Louisville they left a lot of people wondering wtf now!? Other area businesses made a priority of hiring ex-PM employees. I've heard for years the GE is the best part-time job you'll ever have. I have a cousin that works at Ford, his brother works at Toyota. The one at Ford is proud of his union job and his benefits/pension package. His brother likes to make jokes about how his (Toyota) benefits/pension is nearly identical, as is hourly pay, but he doesn't have the union dues. My dad always told me that he couldn't understand the concept of paying a another man so he (dad) could work. After many years in open shops in construction, and having been escorted out the back door while foreigners came through the front.....at three different companies and not just me, 50%+.....I started to wonder if a union job wouldn't be worth the trouble/politics. Alas, that never came to pass but my health did and now, well, it's all a crap shoot. Not to get all deity-esque but I've always heard that when a door closes a window opens. Life IS what you make of it. Take the opportunities available and rock-on.

Agree with 68scott385 there is always opportunities out there if one will look plus many will retrain for other jobs. This isn't the end of the world for these people or the towns they are in. If they are smart they will take some time and make a plan for there future, it will work itself out.

All I can say, is enjoy yourself now, while you can. This will be the last century with internal combustion engines.

No worries - I am 100% confident that I will have blown myself up by the end of this century!

My clock is winding down so ME and I will be gone by the time all the dust settles. But I worry for my Grands and Great-Grands. No doubt they'll land on their feet but still......

Fortunately, they still let folks ride horses....so maybe they'll still let folks drive cars, in a few decades?

I don't see Dodge following the coupe-killer modus operandi.

they're out of money.... outside of Jeep, most of what they do is either break-even or money-loser
