  • 9 Ball Practice

I'm still playing with the new video camera. Trying to figure it out, but I'm still not sure, if it's better or worse. Something "better" would surely cost about 20 times as much as it did. I'm trying to see how it translates into HD on YouTube. I still haven't tried taking any outdoor shots with it... wintertime sucks.

Unit is shaking her head already, "You sure do find strange ways to have fun." Well, she married me quite a few years ago by now, and she's permanently stuck with "this."

If you can hang on long enough to get to the last second or two of this video and you have the volume turned up loud enough, you can hear Unit's voice...."Who are you talking to?"

9 Ball is amateur wham-and-fram. Anything that goes in counts, whether you meant to or not. Unit's brother comes to visit once per year and that's all we do, shoot 9 Ball obsessively. He can actually keep count of how many racks we shoot in two days. Maybe 100. And it for sure doesn't make me any "better" at it.

But he had a great suggestion one time, I may do that next - just set the video camera up and shoot pool for hours. Then edit it down to only the most miraculous-looking shots you weren't even trying to make. A luck-struck highlight movie. Provided I could remember to make a smartass remark after every miracle, like, "Hah! Kids, can you make THAT shot? I'll bet not!"

In retrospect, I've got to say.....about 40 or so years ago, I never would have believed I would ever have a pool table. The guys I hung out with, at the pool halls....there's a table in our house you don't even have to put quarters in to make the balls fall out. I had a fantasy back then, if I ever had a boat, I'm name the boat "Roll the Nine." But now for sure I don't even want a boat.

A boat is an even bigger money-pit than a hot rod !

That watching people stuff quarters into stuff and walking away empty handed. That's what sucked me into video games as a grown man.

we got a pool table in my building. No one plays, everyone is dying.
I think this first attempt at a federal public housing has taught me a few things.

the only thing that goes away from life is players.

we got 17-23 inches of snow coming topped off with wet stuff. I am poking at a half ton frame I keep going myself and realize it is straighter than factory after 22 years willing to take on twice as much.

At times like this 30 years ago in this town of 700... a bunch of us kids would be talking of the storm and playing 9 ball at the little local store.
I try not to get depressed over 9 ball.
funny thing. My brother and I were the worst culprits at sending balls flying across the room.
My uncle spilt sticks down the middle... he was 300 pounds and 26 inch biceps. He gained an audience even being a lousy shot. Big arms tattoos and the thunder that shook the floor when he had to break
as if nothing we did was ever enough.
9 ball and friends taught me that.

No table here, but we used to go to pool halls. many have since closed, not from people stop playing pool but because of the riff raff that hung around it. and the dealings.
It killed a lot of them.
Most folks don't have the room for a pool table. and frankly they are not cheap, well unless you get lucky and a buddies wife is forcing him to remove it.

When we moved here from SC we brought a 55 gallon aquarium with us. That was a big ordeal moving those fish 5.5 hours and setting the tank back up again. We had that and a dining room table in that space. A full dining room table and we never have any company to fill it.

We got tired of the fish like most folks do over time. We gave away the fish and the tank and there was this space. Sue Unit said, "I'll bet we have room for a pool table right here."

Gosh I love that woman. But I knew that already.

I'm still thinking about that lucky shot highlight movie, I'll bet that's next. I can already nearly "see" it.

Nobody should care and don't hold your breath waiting on it, but I did a YouTube search for pool table trick shots. And NO, that's, no. That's.....no. I've got to figure out another way to abuse the new video camera. I'm still thinkin.
