  • been awhile, stuck in maui again till end of month but---

i have collected more stuff to put in like a spare camper for the slider windows--
and to make a custom 'halfcab' conversion so i can run as blazer or stubby truck
    without worrying about rain/thieves etc...

got the tailgate working/opening again-what a PITA that was... (yay!),
did some more welding and fab work, gonna start putting in the 'DIY4X' prebent rollbar (its a nice
setup, bolts thru floor with staked plates AND has plates that slide behind the shoulder belt
mounting bolt-they give you longer grade 8 ones- to tie B pillar/floor/rear wells together.), gotta
look at mounting the durango 3rd row seat to floor behind stock rear seat & back to back with it,
    etc etc...

man i wanna drive it so bad....gots to order a few more things like tailgate tension mounts and
front swaybar bolts so i can run a pair of 'kicker' shocks to try and help avoid front wheelhop, but
man it is close... real close....

        • Love the Blazer! I had a 83 silverado k5 in highschool. Was a fun vehicle and mudder. That was 15 years ago and still have it. Only it has a s-10 body on it now. My boss has 3 or 4 k5's. Couple of rare ones he says. But like all vehicles in Indiana, all rusted out.

          • started the halfcab conversion today on the spare camper...

the rear window 'hoop' is just to keep side rails parallel
for alignment till im almost done, then gets removed.
of course this is just the initial rough mockup-- but
you can see where im going with this.

1st pick is the initial roof removal, 2nd pic is the fairing
just dropped in place. i can see this is going to be a lot
of fitting, sanding, and grinding--but oh so worth it when
done. plans are a plexi back window on the fairing, and
a hard or soft tonneau of some kind to cover rear seat
            area....

sadly this is all so i can pass reconstruction here on oahu.
they dont like the exhaust (even though it exits in exactly
THE SAME PLACE AS STOCK-just 2 sides instead of 1...)
and say since it dont go past last openable window then
im going to get carbon monoxide poisoning, pass out, and crash.

their solution? remove the camper! yeah, cause that way when its
COMPLETELY WIDE OPEN, no exhaust can get in........... aaand
since it rains here almost every day, i dont wanna go topless. so....

            • stuck in maui again for last 2 weeks, but supposed to go home tomorrow 9pm...
hope so! ive gotta--mount mud flaps, finish roll bar, remove camper temporarily,
get an alignment receipt, then try and take it in for "we change the rules as we see fit"
reconstruction, then safety IF i pass recon, then registration (dang near $700.....ouch!)
then back to safety for the sticker and then-ONLY then- will it be legal to drive.
              what a buncha BULLSH@T....

                • alright, its been a few minutes, but...

popped the side glass out and started tack welding bars together.
theres matching steel backup plates under the kicker bars where
they sit on the wheelwell. hope to get more done this weekend.....

p.s--the "cheap" welding blankets I got from amazon ($18 each, vs $89
                  each locally...) are AWESOME...…......

oh i totally do, and badly--but all I got is wire feed flux core. I console myself with
the fact that "SMAW" stands for 'shielded metal arc welding' and
arc weldings been around forever and done right is strong.

I mean they put oil derrecks together vwith arc welding. as for
the welds being "unattractive", that's what a 4 inch angle grinder,
a flapper wheel and some rustoleum is for.

yeah..... its been kinda ridiculous. the rollbar idea was originally pitched by the wife
to ensure kiddies back there were safe, THEN it became mandatory because recon
decided that despiite the fact this truck passed the feds 1982 rollover standards,
"you need to conform to OUR standards" and the 'glass rear roof mandates a rollbar.

                                yeah. tell me about it.
