  • Reno Air Race 2019

What a blast, if you've never, you should add this to your bucket list. Despite the terrible crash of Mike Patey, it was a lot of fun
hopped on an airplane and away we went

    beautiful flight down

landed in Truckee (oh the fun wind)

    the airport in Stead

so excited to see Draco and meet Mike Patey

84 cylinders of awesome... it's going into a plane to compete with Dreadnought

even airplanes make sacrifices to the gods of speed

new class coming (hopefully) next year 'cheap jet'

and let's not forget the Thunderbirds - I think Thursday was actually better then Saturday because Thursday they were playing

that said Saturday was pretty damn good too

STOL drags - 2000 foot strip - take off/land in 2000 feet then spin around and first one stopped at the start/finish line wins.... some pictures but if you've never seen it, watch some of what Corey Robins posted on YouTube....
    take off

throw plane sideways to slow down

    land

    use Nitrous for the win

also watch Jets go by at 500 mph

    these are fun to watch

the lawnmower 3 next to some other jet

Hal (the guy who owns the Lawnmower) had his engine die on the way to Oshkosh, so he had a friend grab another and meet him in the field where he landed... he replaced the motor and was 8 hours behind the group getting to Oshkosh... same motor competing in the STOL drags

    love the old Stinsons

Imagine doing stunts in your Camry.... this is that equivalent (and also a Bonanza)

    so fun to watch

    great demonstration flight

Go fast, turn left 50 feet off the ground at 500 mph. Again, if you get a chance, it's well, well worth it.

Stinsons are fine, but Staggerwings are Cadillacs by comparison.

Thanks, this is already on my bucket list. I appreciate the coverage you gave us on the 'side' stories. How many days were you there?

We flew out of Seattle on Wednesday, went to the Races Thursday and Saturday, spent Friday at Harrah's auto museum and Virginia City, then flew back on Sunday (which was quite the adventure since we had to avoid some pretty big weather - eta on takeoff was 4 1/2 hours, actual time was closer to 7 hours). With that said, we had a hitchhiker so we went Seattle - Sacramento - Truckee. Going back, we went Truckee - Sacramento - turned right at Medford, then back north at Redmond - Yakima - Snoqualmie - Seattle.

That entire display was featuring Stinsons and Cessnas - there were some really cool planes there

              for example

pretty sure that's only enough for the morning... those planes were gorgeous, and it was easy to see the owner - that was the guy with the rag wiping the plane

my advice from my 2x at the Reno Air Races.
                    1) get there before 9 (the gates open at 7:30, but it's all set up before about 8:45)
                    2) stay in North Reno or even Sparks.... there is little to 'see' downtown outside of casinos and the auto museum. All the casinos downtown are connected by skybridges.
                    3) rent a car
                    4) if you can pull it off, get to Reno the weekend before to see the Balloon stampede - 360* horizonto 5000 feet of sky filled with hot air balloons
                    5) don't buy the season pass, rather, buy a general admission for your first, weekday along with a pit pass
                    6) wear good walking shoes for the general admission day - you will walk nearly the 2 miles of the field length
                    7) buy a reserved seat as high on the grandstands as you can find for Sat/Sun races - two benefits, first better view but second the banners on the top of the grandstands shade you from the sun (and finally, the air races and the air show come onto the field from behind the stands - if you're on the back row you can stand up and watch them come in.
                    8) carry your seat pad for that day
                    9) get a wide brim hat and 100 block sun screen Stead Airpark is 5000 feet above sea level
                    10) it gets windy, so good sunglasses will preserve your eyesight and keep the dust out.
                    11) you'll never realize you're dehydrated until it's too late - because of the altitude, heat and wind you won't actually seem to sweat.... drink lots of liquid and a bit of gatorade or lemonade as well (also, on the walk around day - sunscreen on the back of your calves... just sayin'
                    12) On the weekday, the air show (Thunderbirds or Blue Angels) - are practice sessions so they will be loud and nearly supersonic, on the weekend is a traditional show - awesome in its own right but a bit more canned and with less noise.
                    13) STOL competition, good from the stands, better from the South end of the course - but only on weekdays, this year the jets were left on the ramp so blocked some view. That said, it makes perfect sense why they did that - there were a lot of people in the display area.
                    14) The schedule can change, the STOL didn't happen on Sunday because the winds were greater then was safe to fly, for some reason the F18 didn't give a show either but there was no announcement why (guessing the show was running long).
                    15) They have been doing these races since 1964 and they do an amazing job of having 3 races in process at all times so there really isn't much down time (one loaded on the tarmac, one with planes warming up, one race going on with an air show between the recovery/launch/start.

Feel free to ask questions. We didn't go all the days, we went Thursday and Saturday then went to Virginia City, the auto museum and Summit Racing on Friday. If I did it again, I'd arrive Thursday am before the races at the Reno airport (commercial flight), go Thursday, Saturday and Sunday then off-day it on Friday.
