  • Interesting Geological Find

There I was this morning working on the tree/mud/vine bank behind the house. Yes, the $40 Harbor Freight chainsaw is still working. Still. I was tugging on a pile of vines and roots and this thing popped out and rolled down the bank. I've done all the searches I can imagine and I haven't seen anything like it yet. It's rock hard and rock heavy. What the heck is this, some kind of fossil? Any feedback would feed my curiosity.

My Google Fu says Coral Fossil or Agitized Coral. Can\t find many pictures of the paisley looking part but a lot of the innards.

Here's one that says it's a coral fossil cross section. That's just about it, mighty closer than anything I've found. The pattern on the outside of it is fascinating. It's really neat to look at under a magnifying glass.

Cool stuff, thanks guys! Did I ever say that I love BangShift? If I didn't I meant to. Now we can wonder why a piece of fossilized coral was mixed in with a little toy pistol, a GI Joe walkie talkie, broken glass, a house for sale sign, very old barbed wire and a plastic flip flop in that dirt pile.

Now that you bring up the other junk I revise my opinion to just coral. Souvenir to junk, back to souvenir. I was hoping for a geological dig to ensue.

Where do you get a magnifying glass large enough to get under ?

But doesn't it get warm under a magnifying glass?

This area is just loaded with interesting historical artifacts right underfoot. We were riding our trikes on the Greenway this morning and we stopped to take a break. Unit was wandering around and discovered an old pig graveyard. They must have buried them pretty shallow.

Yep, undoubtedly a petrified pig's nose. Rare indeed.
