  • Mystery Transmission?

Click image for larger version Name:	Mystery Trans.png Views:	76 Size:	474.4 KB ID:	1291755 Well, at least a mystery to me. the side cover appears to be Borg Warner & it may be a 4-speed but my vote is a 3-speed with OD. I do not believe that I have ever come across a rear housing with some type of mount on top like that one though. Other than the shift lever on that & the weird top mount, it reminds me of a full-synchro 3-speed that I used to have. A friend asked me for help ID'ing it. Don't know what his interest is. Anyone have any ideas?

does it say T85 on it? Looks like it's just the normal heavy duty three speed, from a van, from the 1960s.

With the shape and bolt pattern of the side cover, the bearing plate sandwiched between the main case and the tailshaft housing, and with the reverse lever in the tailhousing, it looks like a Borg Warner T10 variant.

actually the T10 is the 4 speed variant of the T85, which came first.

Did the vans use a top mount like that?

actually, looking closer...it looks like it IS the T10, from a van. They had a column shift 4 speed option. Note the reverse lever on the tail housing.

Never heard of a column shifted 4-speed. I have had several earlier (1950's) 3-speed overdrives that were similar. They all had the solenoid attached to the tail shaft. That probably served the same purpose as a shift lever there because I do not remember a lever back there on them. I think that they just had a switch inside to activate the solenoid.
