What programs do you like/dislike,and why?
For example:HOT ROD TV-never liked it,no prticular reason.
Speed Channel-Too much NASCAR,even the commercials are all junyer, all the time.
That Chip Foose show_ Fake theievery gets old,and the makeovers just to ugly.
I'll chime in later with other opinions.

    I like motorweek.
I really don't care which of the sub-compacts actually get the milage the epa sticker says it does. But I like the show for some reason. Maybe John Davis' voice.
...I mean that in a heterosexual way.
...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I used to watch it when it was on PBS I liked it too.
Car Crazy-I know he sponsers the show, but I don't think his is using it for a shill,he really LIKES cars.
My Classic Car- D.G. tries too hard to be "funny",can't stand why he tugs on that ugly hat like it's glued to his head.Otherwise good show.
American Hot Rod-Waiting for a total rustbucket to come in on Monday, and be done for following Saturday deadline. Can't stand some of thet people but I find it entertaing. Some employees dissapear, never to be heard from again.

The only one I thoroughly enjoy is "Gearz" on ESPN2. It's hosted by Stacy David who used to be on "Trucks". His passion and enthusiasm for the hobby is what keeps me interested. His latest project is a restoration and customization of Ted Nugent's Bronco.

It's about the only show where they give decent how-to information.

American Hot Rod is the worst. Boyd basically drove off all his great employees in order to build cars with "producer induced drama". I bet before the show; they never once built a car in 8 weeks. I know I wouldn't pay 6 figures for a car that was thrown together in two months.

            Re: Automotive related T.V. programs

I liked the one episode of hot rod tv ten years ago that had a glimpse of my car in it...but other than that, I don't like shows about cars much at all. maybe because I'm more of a junkyard builder, and they are selling new parts.

Not to worry, my overall opinion of tv is pretty low....so I don't dislike the car shows any more than I dislike the rest of it.

Now if someone could come up with a way to get some neat video of real guys doing real things with cars, and put it on the internet so I could watch it at my lesiure...then I'd probably tune in....

              Re: Automotive related T.V. programs

Any car show where one of the aftermarket suppliers, or manufacturers comes in and gives away tens of thousands of dollars of parts to people who'd only complain that it raised their taxes this year.

I stopped buying from Jegs and Summit for several years because of their gifts to those shows.... Rant time - while Monster Garage was the worst offender, most shows have done this - Jegs or Summit bring in tens of thousands of dollars worth of parts and give them to the show as "freebies". I take offense to that because I know who paid the dollars to buy parts from them so they could give it away...... I would certainly show a bit of forgiveness if they would, in turn, throw a LS7 to one of their faithful customers - but alas, according to the big parts houses the show's host is more in need of free auto parts then me.

As for other unreal shows, I love watching American Hotrod for slip ups that show the car wasn't done as fast as they claim... such as a 4 week build that starts before Memorial day and ends after Labor day.

              Decent shows... the Power block.

I like the Powerblock too. I don't know if I like HRTV - the schedule is so erratic that I can virtually never catch it. The ones I've seen don't present enough tech that I can follow what they're doing - like they don't REALLY think a viewer would actually do this stuff.

Stacey David is a treasure. He's SO wound up (kind of a Ty Pennington of cars/trucks), and he actually KNOWS something. Fair guitar player, too, given his ADD. Fun to watch. I sometimes catch Gearz when I can find it. I guess I haven't programmed his broadcast times into my memory bank and we don't have a TIVO.

There's a great show on local cable access in the Metro Chicago area called Motorsports Unlimited. The energetic Bill Wildt does an amazing job of covering just about any local automotive event from local cruise nights to his annual tribute to the first organized automobile race ever run...right here in Chicago!!

                        Re: Automotive related T.V. programs

I don't watch too many of them because for what sounds like the same reasons already mentioned. I do like Overhaulin for the sake it returns a usually beat car to an unrusted usually more powerful version. Best episode I've seen was a rusted out '67-'68'? Buick GS400 Converterible. I think they hacked two or three other cars together to get that Convertible back to structural integrity. That is just Awesome. Weren't they the ones that put a DuraMax in a '65 Impala?

I enjoy a few episodes of Pimp my Ride just for the comedic value, though I've seen them ruin a few classics :-\
                        Escaped on a technicality.

                          Re: Automotive related T.V. programs

I have tried to watch all of them and I end up walking away feeling like they're either a cheezy marketing shill, oriented toward checkbook enthusiasts or people that done't actuall work on cars, or are way too 'reality tv'. A couple of very early HR TV shows got my creative juices flowing, but I think that's about it.

I want to see bonneville and maxton covered grassroots style--as if I was walking through the pits. Show us the little guy who put his junk together to run there. Cover the hunert car pileup and other non-traditional shows--cover SEMA with an eye for the 95% of us out there that work on a budget. Show some 'creative' tech, for god's sake--we all don't shop for bolt-ons from summit or fabricate everything on the car--I mean let's see some junkyard tech. And lose the fake scripted humor and bad acting--just have some real car guys with some real enthusiasm. There is a vacuum in TV land for car shows, because I think they have all missed the basic culture of hot rodding. The show could cover the history of hot rodding, old hot rod movies that are cool and where to get them, it could feature web resources for parts and particular niche forums that have their own sub-cultures--no one is thinking outside the box right now.

Pretty much none of them. Most just seem too contrived. Thin or pretend tech, shills for sponsor parts with no journalistic integrity (we installed the Tornado on our blown big block), and hopelessly artificial plot efforts combine to leave me cold. I will watch Pinks from time to time - the street racing feel rings true to my past...
