    Re: More Parts Counter Idiocy.....

I'm telling you guys, you should spend some time behind the counter. For every clueless idiot with his finger up his nose behind the counter, there's a dozen clueless idiots who should be banned from owning tools coming in or calling. Both categories are highly entertaining - as long as you are not the one dealing with them.

          I'll Share:

-A customer comes in with a wiper arm with a wiper blade attached, can't take the wiper blade off. I take the wiper blade off for him and then he asks if i can put the arm back on the car. I declined and he starts going off on me saying I have to put it back on. My boss got involved and put it back on for him but really WTF man.

-Had another guy one time ask to install this mirror he got from the junkyard on this car, he took it off so i guess he knew what a screwdriver was but really?

-Me and my boss got stuck with a customer one night till almost closing cause he was looking for some rims for his car which he didn't bring to the store and didn't know what size the tire was.

-Had another customer bring in a rusty piece of metal and wanted me to tell him what it was.

-A Guy needing a 150 F Thermostat for this car meanwhile they don't as far as I know go down that low.

            Re: More Parts Counter Idiocy.....

A guy called up wanting prices on rear brake pads for his car. There were different ones listed for a convertible, so naturally I asked 'is it a convertible?' His response: 'How can I tell if it is?'

A guy borrowed a ratchet to put a battery in his car. I handed him a ratchet with a 6 inch extension and a 10mm socket, should be perfect for undoing the hold down, right? He grabs it by the extension and starts poking the the handle of the ratchet at the hold down. He was not joking. He really did not know how to operate a wrench.

Another guy just bought a used Hyundai. Tennessee does not require front license plates but for some reason he absolutely HAD to have the correct factory bolts to hold the front plates on. Rather than argue with him, I went through the motions of checking the computer and every pertinent paper catalogue we had, showing him that There was just no way to look it up. I then proceeded to go out to the car so I could look at it and match things up that way. Someone had cut out the original mounting holes and attached a license plate frame by the bottom holes. There was absolutely nothing we had that would fit in the spot where the original holes were. I went back inside and tried to explain this and see if we could figure something out that will work. I got about 3 words out of my mouth and he starts yelling "You have no idea what you're talking about. I KNOW you can look up the correct parts. Don't try to bullshit me, I'm ASE certified."

Whenever somebody says their car won't start, my immediate reaction now is 'Is there gas in it?' This is a learned response and can save lots of time when asked up front.

If I test your battery, I'm also going to test your alternator and inspect the battery cables for corrosion. When I tell you your alternator is shot and isn't recharging your battery, don't call me the next day screaming at me for selling you a junk battery when your car doesn't start.

When you call to ask about parts for your car, know what kind of car it is. 'I think it's a Chevy' does me no good.

I will never forget the girl that came in to get a tune up kit for her boyfriends car.

When I asked what kind of car it was - no kidding - she said "it's blue" :

Ever wondered how advanced the human race could be if it weren't for all those brainless twits slowing the rest of the people, who at least CAN think for themselves, way down.

                  Re: More Parts Counter Idiocy.....

My favorite part to find is an engine mount for a 400 or 455 Pontiac. I can get frame mounts all day long but really that isnt a wear item on a Pontiac. Getting the part that bolts to the engine is something we can only get from the Pontiac only people or resto places like OPG/Year One.

I always check when I get any parts for a 400 Pontiac because they will far too often assume its the same as a chevy. So I get gaskets, water pumps, and whatever else for chevy all the time... So I tend to not to go to the new guys.

Had a kid in Charleston at the NAPA who didnt know what a Turbo 400 rebuild kit was, he said they didnt carry them. I couldnt get the old guy to come over, so I left and got it somewhere else. I used to buy only from NAPA, but anymore I just cant handle having to explain everything to them.

I feel for parts guys tho too. Plenty of morons brought their cars to me and told me what was wrong.

The timing chain broke, thats why the engine is locked up and there is a window in the block. That 1/2" long piece of threaded rod stuck in the ring grooves of #7 didnt cause the piston to break and the rod to snap, nah it was the timing chain. It also died at idle and those witness marks inside the case dont tell me it died around 6k...

The light has been on but the white smoke stopped coming out, but now its making a squeaking noise and shaking like crazy, what should I do?

Power steering and brake fluid are the same thing right?

                    Re: More Parts Counter Idiocy.....

I've been using the Napa close to my place for several years now and they always do a great job and have pretty much whatever I need right in stock.

                    Even the stuff that's a little odd-ball...
-shoes for the 14 bolt SF I swapped into my Tahoe
-putting a GMT800 truck 130 amp alternator in place of the 105 amp stocker on my GMT400 Tahoe and then putting the belt from a 145 amp GMT400 truck on it

I've had poor experiences with VIP, which tends to have crappier help but better hours than Napa. I've found the local Car Quest to be somewhere in between.

In her defense, it's like when I get sent to the store for my wife's personal, feminine products - and they ask what kind... I say "comes in a green package." ;D
