  • Proud Dad Announcement!! Whoo hoo!!

Judd just found out he has been offered an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy! He got his congressional nomination a week ago and just got his official notification. Dang, I am busting!

He has also applied to the U.S. Air Force Academy (where my other son Jake is currently a junior) and that still remains his #1 choice. He may not hear from USAFA for a couple of months though. Jake did not find out until March 28th. To find out this early in the process is pretty dang nice, and indicative of what a competitive candidate he is.

Guess we need to get cracking on that Galaxie!

Congratulations Judd! Please remember that AF wings are made of lead, but, Navy wings are made of GOLD!

That does he teach? Judd currently thinks mechanical engineering is what he wants to pursue.

Judd also just got a call from one of our Senators saying they nominated him for USAFA.

(An applicant must have a nomination from a Senator or your US Representative in order to get a appointment from an academy. Either one can only have 5 cadets per academy at one time so an additional nomination definitely increases Judd's chances of receiving an appointment.)

The acceptance rate for USAFA, USNA and West Point is around 9%. Each class is usually around 1300 kids, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Factor in that many of the kids are recruited athletes (football, baseball, basketball, fencing, swimming, diving, gymnastics, precision shooting etc etc), you can see that the available slots for kids like Judd can be very hard to come by. Each academy has it's own, somewhat lengthy admissions process. Each applicant must pass the DODMERB medical exam and also complete a timed candidate fitness exam (run, pushups, pull ups, sit ups, etc). Then each congress member has their own application and interview process. Judd applied to both state senators and our representative, so he had three additional applications to complete, each with multiple essays. The process is much more involved than applying to a traditional university. He applied to Texas A&M and was accepted there like the next week.
