  • New (to me) Suburban Time

    Howdy folks,

As much as I love Bruce (our 1998 K2500 Suburban with the 454), it's at 200k miles and it is a salvage title vehicle I got with a long backlog of neglected maintenance. Now while I've been putting good parts and effort into the truck, there's a limit to how much I want to trust it driving from the Bay Area, CA to Central TX with a family of 4 and two cats in the beginning of summer. I won't say I'm not going to but it's time to start thinking what the alternative is as with higher gas prices, the market for these things is starting to become a bit more tame. This is our "do everything we don't need very often" vehicle so it hauls people, car parts, tows, go light off roading, camping, etc. I can ride the bus or my bike (or potentially an e-bike) for most of my commuting so the gas cost of having something like this is irrelevant but the comparative costs inside of having such a vehicle is worth considering.

I'm not going to get something with a 4L60/65E, period. Also the 5.3L Flex-Fuels seem to have some issues more than their bigger brothers even after the 6L80E becomes the base transmission. This leaves the GMT800 2500s and the GMT900s either 2500 or with the 6.2L (Denali and Escalade). I want 4WD as well. I'm partial to another 2500 but that's a hit on gas mileage but a simpler and more durable vehicle. Voice your opinion in the poll and comments.

I had a 2004 Denali - nice truck but the electronics are what caused its eventual demise. I think the later generations got a better handle on the gee whiz stuff, so watch carefully on that platform because no one makes parts for the electronic body stuff - they especially like eating HVAC controls. Strangely, the dash - a problem with their Suburban brothers - isn't in the Denali... and I have no idea why that is because they interchange

13 mpg city 15 highway (ish)... get happy with the skinny pedal and 11 is likely.... even on the highway. Ours was a 1/2 ton but had the 4L65e trans (which is a better trans then the 4L60e)

Sorry, but, I was trying to push the 8.1 liter when the screen reframed due to ads... The 8.1s are rare but, worth it if you find a well maintained one!

Maybe it's the market forces with the gas prices but I've seen ~40% of listings have the 8.1L these days though they do tend to be in the 140-180k mile range while the 100-150k mile units tend to be a bit heavier on the 6.0L's.

I'm of the opinion that when the vehicle size increases to something like the size you're talking the engine type shifts to Diesel. Just my .

              Dan,

Unfortunately the last diesel in a Suburban was the 6.5L in the 1999 K2500 and jump to 2021 when they finally put the 6.2L Duramax in one. Big gassers are really all that's available unless you pay through the nose for a 7.3L Excursion with a quarter million miles. I don't have the time to send a 6.0L up to be BulletProof Diesel'd.

amen. the 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E and 4L65E and any variants
are the WORST gm transmission ever in my personal AND
professional opinion. my 82 K5 runs a th350 because the
                700R4 took a sh#t--gee, a transmission with a 260ftlb rating
in a 5500lb truck-what could possibly go wrong?

as for O/D, i live on a tiny island and dont need it.

Completely agree, my parents bought a new K5 in 83 and it had the 700r4 replaced multiple times under warranty.
