All of this 'mixing' of fasteners happened when the third shift guy dropped the hardware conex out in the warehouse. They just scooped it up and handed it out.

I do remember mimeograph machines, and the smell of the process. And real blueprints. 30 percent ammonia developing solution. And the final project for 3rd year mechanical drawing class was done with India Ink on linen. When you got it back after grading the teacher told us to wash it in the washing machine. It washed whatever made it feel like paper out, and you had a drawing on a huge piece of cloth. I kept it for years, but eventually it got misplaced. It'd be neat to have it still.

And you'd think that after working on building paper machinery for 10 years back then I'd know how that stuff was made! Nah...
the Head Deacon in my parents church had to print out the weekly bulletins (handouts given at church) with a printer that used carbon paper. I still remember that smell on Thursday night while he cranked out 200 or so bulletins. I may have also learned a few words when he hit the wrong key on the conventional typewriter. I also might have heard some interesting words when the printer was delivered to him each time he became the head deacon (yearly change).

6.35 mm, 9.525 mm, and 12.7 mm. That's the answer to the original question. BTW 42 is "what is the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything ". And the question in reality is "what is 6x7".
