  • Very Old Woodie

I was looking through some old slides and found this old Mercedes with a cool wood body. I was wondering if any of you car freaks might know what it is. The body was incredible, there were thousands of brass nails in the woodwork. I found the coach builder's tag, but I'm not sure about the year and the engine details.

Yeah, but back in the day the people who originally owned it had servants to take care of keeping it clean! ;)

I thinking the guy that owns it now might have servants. His watch looked like it cost more than my house.

I found out what this is. The Mercedes 37/90 HP Skiff was produced from 1911 through 1914. The body was designed by Henri Labourdette and the engine by Paul Daimler. The powerful front-mounted, four-cylinder pushrod engine drove the chain-driven rear wheels. There was one intake valve, two exhaust valves, and a single block of four cylinders. The peak horsepower was realized at above 1200 RPM from the 9.5 liter power-plant. Equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, the 95 horsepower vehicle was capable of achieving a top speed of over 70 miles-per-hour. Not bad for a 4300 pound equipped with a four-cylinder engine.
In the process I found the Mother of all Woody sites. http://www.oldwoodies.com/gallery.htm

I worked on a 1918 Locomobile that had a 427 Cu. in. 6cyl. The Pistons looked like Coffee cans. The tranny was milled from solid Brass and weighed as much as my Little Kia. Had 36 inch wooden Spoke wheels. And the detail of all the Wood and Brass was awesome.
