  • Ford vs. Chevy; 8pax SUV Edition

So Bruce (the K2500 Suburban) can’t keep the AC working properly and I’m on my third time through it. I think it’s blend doors and/or actuators this time so at least it’s something different but I’m getting pretty tired of messing with it. There’s a list of other things that need work too, chief amongst is the rust in the windshield frame that lets water in and the dash that’s cracked bad enough that something is squeaking badly. I’m really starting to think that I need something that needs more just basic maintenance vs. rebuild items.

I need 8pax capacity for Scouts and international college students who don’t drive, cargo room behind the passengers for camping gear, and SUV level ground clearance as the area campsite we use 3-4 times a year is only accessible by deeply rutted farm roads and I’ve watched minivans and sedans bottom out despite efforts to avoid it. That really means the GM Suburban/Yukon XL vs. the Ford Expedition EL/Navigator L. Ford looks to have made decent ones 2013-2014 after fixing the 5.4L 3V but before the 3.5 Ecoboost while GM has 4L60E issues 2001-2006 and 5.3L AFM issues 2002-2013. The exception to really any major issues is the GM 2500 units with the 6.0L and either 4L80E or 6L90E but they are rarer and command a premium.

    Thoughts?

nothing with the 4L60E is my vote--as you already
noted, they are known to have issues. i sure wouldnt
own one, and the absolute first thing i did on my 82 K5
was pull the TH700-4R (grandpa to the 4L60E) and
    put in a TH350.

the max torque capacity for a stock 700-4R is 285ftlb
and thats the BEST version (earlier ones were 245ftlb)
the 4L60E's are the same, 285ftlb. now stick it in a 6500+
pound truck and gee i wonder why they fail....

GM 2500 with the 8100 Vortec.... have heard of many making it 300K+ miles.... eats gas, but reliable.... 3.73 gears if you can find it!

I just bought a 318,000 mile 2004 yukon xl . Still has the original 5.3 and 4L60 , 3.42 limited slip diff. It was my good brother in laws so I know it's for real . My oldest son has a 2006 with the 8.1 and a 4L80E . The people that owned it drug around a RV trailer tranny went out at 230,000 . Should be good for another couple hundred thousand . Now that 8.1 only gets like 13 on the highway not towing. My son drags a 38 foot 7800 lb. RV trailer. When that happens it goes down to 8 to 9 . Personally if your not going to drive it too much I'd do 6.0 4L60 or 80 3/4 ton . If your going to drive it alot and not tow heavy trailers , I'd do 5.3 4L60 in a half ton . The half tons have coil springs as opposed to the 3/4 tons leafs and ride like a dream . Gas mileage isn't too bad . I haven't checked but would guess 16 or 17 mpg .

Looks like the 2001 thru 2010 3/4 ton 'burbs are killin' it with 100 %. Yeah , only 3 votes but we'll keep that part quite.

I don't have any info on this so I'll sit back and . I stopped doing research once we settled on the Flex but that won't suit your needs.

G.m. with factory tow package .
problem with the 4l60/65e is owners think their driving is lite duty and never do a filter and fluid change till 100k or more.
Those that get serviced at 45- 50k miles don't have issues if not beat to death .

my vote is old school 73-92 k5 with a 3rd row added, or same years suburban.
in fact id say only the earlier ones, no computer, a carb, and no O/D trans for
reliable and simple.... but thats just me. you all know im a dinosaur, so.....

If I HAD to have a 3/4 ton people mover , I would entertain a Excursion. Of course I'd look for one with a bad engine and/or transmission and go GM 8.1 and a NV4500 . Or possibly a 6 liter.

I'm guessing for the straight front axle and possibly a lift kit?

I still like the look of lifted trucks but unless I put some full size axles under my S10 ...... I'm done . I just always have liked big trucks . And suv wise , there's non bigger . And even though I'm a Chevy guy I like the super duty fords because the don't seem emasculated like a lot of half tons with there aero styled bodies.
