  • Liggett Family Reunion

I got back this afternoon after seeing all my aunts, uncles, cousins, and second cousins that are still around on my Dad's side of the family. My sister actually made it out this time from Maryland. It was wonderful and hard too. My Dad's oldest brother is the oldest Liggett and he's just hanging on. He got diagnosed with PSP, Peripheral Superalgia Palsey, or something like that, about 7 years ago. He's not doing too good. For the past two and half years Ron has been under 24 hour care.

The rough part was the car Ron bought just before getting sick. At my Dad's funeral he described to me what car he always wanted, a 65 Mustang GT convertible, 289, 4 speed, poppy red.

This is the car he bought. 65 GT convert, 289, 4 spd, ac. The color is different. This was a one owner car with 33K miles. It runs and drives great, but it needs cosmetics. My cousin Mike is in charge of it since Uncle Ron can no longer drive it, or anything else. Mike had to hold off on his plan to restore it because of the economy.

The weather was just perfect for cruising this thing. Me and the cousins all used any excuse to drive it back into town for what ever reason. We ran an entire tank of gas off of it just running around the small town of Farmington where my cousin Pam has a farm.

I found this in Pam and Paul's barn. It's a '53 Furgeson. It has been mostly restored to get use on Pam's farm. I got it out and drove it all over the property and scaring the family along with the horses.

Sweet, sweet Mustang. I guess for a visiting city boy it'd be a tough decision whether to cruise the 'Stang into town or putt around the farm on the tractor. Either sounds great. :D

I need myself a Big Green Tractor ;D
I do like old tractors, why are they always green

Nice Mustang too, never seen a convert 4 speed one before though, that has to be fairly rare
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

That is a great looking mustang - I'm sure the cosmetics are obvious in person to the discerning eye - but on this side of the monitor - that thing looks perfect. Sorry to hear of the owner's failing health -but happy to hear a trusted family member is carrying on his dream.

old tractors rule - I hope to have a piece of property someday that will warrant having one - with hydraulics!

Sounds like you made the most of your trip!

The Mustang looks really nice, they had so many options for colors and interiors, etc. back then, very cool. What state was the reunion in Scott ?

Minneapolis area. Mostly around Rosemont, Apple Valley, and Farmington MN.

The Mustangs white interior is pretty cooked, as well as the white top. The once black carpet is faded to a dark yellow. The engine is pretty tired and will be set aside, but kept, for a 5.0 with a little more oomph. The clutch needs replacing too. Under real acceleration it starts to slip.

thankfully those are all minor issues - as long as the $ is available for replacement parts - the parts for those cars are very much available from a multitude of sources as I'm sure you know.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

I figured with all the grass it couldn't be New Mexico - but maybe. Hopefully they can still get white replacement stuff, that looks so much classier than basic black. We had a '64-1/2 and a '65 (green and blue respectively, both had black interiors) when I was in junior high school. The '64 became my first car when my mom passed away in '71.

Dude. The tractor is killer. Please don't post any more pics of tractors though, because Brian hasn't had a productive moment since. It's like porn for him.

Which begs the question now, does Brian pick up on tractors at family reunions?
                          Escaped on a technicality.

                            Re: Liggett Family Reunion

There are few tractors at my family reunions.... :'(

Ok, now I have been holding my tongue on that Ferguson. I didn't want to go tractor-dork until someone else brought it up.

Ferguson was a very neat guy. An irish inventor, he came up with the 3-point hitch to attach implements to tractors. The 3 point hitch, aside from being convenient it was also a literal life saver. When tractors used to pull plows before the 3-point hitch and the plow got hung up on something, the tractors tended to "climb the ring gear" and flip over backwards. This normally ended with a dead farmer. The three point hitch was designed in a manner such that if the plow got hung up, the top bar actually forced the nose of the tractor down, both increasing traction and preventing a roll over.

Henry Ford was so impressed with this simple, effective design he had Ferguson bring a machine equipped with a 3-point hitch to a farm he owned to watch it work. He and Ferguson made famous "hand shake" deal that results in millions of Ford tractors being equipped with Ferguson's design. It ended badly when Ford produced the 8N (the most popular tractor of all time) and used the 3-point hitch without paying Ferguson royalties. Ferguson sued Ford and walked away with over 9 million bucks. Huge money for the day.

That 53 that Scott is sitting on is virtually identical to a late 1940's/early 1950's 8N Ford.

                            There...that's better.
That which you manifest is before you.
