Electric Backhoe/Loader

I wish I knew how to cut n paste from my Email but in the current SAE Smartbrief they have an article on a Case electric backhoe/loader with performance comparable to a (IIRC) 57HP Diesel unit. They claim between 4 and 8 hours run time with backhoe use offering around 8 hours but with less run time using it to move the machine and move stuff with the loader.

I'm thinking this is both good and bad. If the job is indoors (we had this in the EPA lab building from time to time) this thing would be great. But for the most part I don't know how you would recharge it on a worksite. Seems like you would have to bring in a gas or Diesel powered generator which defeats the purpose.

Yes, inside existing structures will be its forte. No point emissions to deal with, and an electrical infrastructure to recharge the battery. When these were first being talked about, your point was brought up. No one will be using these on unimproved sites, at least no before an electrical feed is installed.

But for situations where an engine's exhaust will be an issue, they will be the cat's pajamas!

Go big or go home. Says they charge in 30 minutes on a 6 MEGAwatt charger. Doesn't say how much of a shift the battery lasts, though the time it last is dependent on haul distance and gradient of haul road so harder to give a fixed value.
