  • Anybody Near San Antonio With A Welder?

My brother in San Antonio TX (is there another San Antonio?) has a wild hair for a new project, something about a railroad go cart - not sure I get it. Anyhow, he'll need some welding done. Given that I'm impossibly far away, do we know anyone in the area who could melt some stuff together for him? I just talked him out of the HF cheap flux core welder as I can't see him getting structurally sound welds (he's not an experienced weldor) out of one of those little buggers and I'd like to see him live 'till the end of his test ride.

So Insanity Does Run In The Family, eh?
What is the Plan Here? Racing a Train, or a Willy E. Coyote Dash in Front of a Train?

Not to burst his bubble, but he might want to check the legality of that first. Unless it's different out there, around here I would bet that would be considered trespassing.

It's hard to look at dis-used railroad tracks and not imagine building something that could run on them. I had always figured on something light that could be moved from pickup truck bed to railroad tracks easily, and be lifted and turned around for a round trip. What I like about the rocket design is, the power unit could be on a swivel mount and you just swing it around to reverse directions...very practical. You do want your rocket-powered railroad-track kart to be practical, and who says that because we don't have those degree-things, we can't still be engineers?

That's the general idea only his will be much simplified. Like, no flame.

Russell - this is, apparently, a "thing". No clue how they work around the law.

I think the work around for trespassing is like speeding . If you get caught , you pay the fine . It may hurt a little bit probably worth the risk .

I'm afraid my brother has seen this video or one like it. Somehow, his crank got turned. It's not my fault. But we still need a weldor.

You have more faith in adhesives than I do.

I hope your brothers is better designed than the one in the video. I wonder if the gauge on the old rail is not consistent. Running off the rails doesn't look like fun.

After seeing the video he will probably be ok. Not sure if there are any non active rails around here, but if you tried that on an active rails and your cart conducts electric from one rail to the other (shunting the track)I am willing to bet you would get a visit if you stick around for any length of time.
