  • Should I replace the oil pump?

I have the pan off on my Impala. The oil pump is right there, one bolt and voila it's out. I'm wondering if I should replace now while it's easy. I put it in sometime in the winter of '97. I honestly don't know how many miles are on it. I'm guessing somewhere around 40K. It's a Melling high volume. I'm thinking of just getting a Melling standard pump to replace it.

I'll be posting the mess I've made today in my Project Car thread later.

RUN IT. Mine is the original 68 302 high volume and still works great @ 7500 RPM.

If there wasn't anything in the pan or screen that didn't belong there, then go ahead and keep it in there and go with it.
If there is anything in the screen or shavings or slivers in the pan, then by all means pull it and get a new one.

If there is any doubt, pull it out.
        when in doubt,.. throttle out

I'd leave it in, unless you have some specific reason to change it. They don't seem to make stuff like they used to...as far as replacement parts

Re: Should I replace the oil pump?

I took it apart and was wondering what fails on an oil pump? I know original pump drive shafts had a plastic or nylon end on the pump. (Went with the nylon gear on the timing chain). Also, It seems that it can eventually have wear on the pump cover by the gears and the low clearance between the two.

Re: Should I replace the oil pump?

I've never had an oil pump failure that didn't involve metal particles being sent into it first. Oil pumps for industrial applications are sometimes "lifetime guaranteed" simply because after all, they are pumping a lubricant. I'd leave it. 8)

Re: Should I replace the oil pump?

If you had good Oil pressure, no metal went through it, leave it alone. Popping it off only leaves you room to forget something or not seating it right, etc. putting a new one in.

Here's a couple of pics of the pumps guts. The cover shows a bit of wear.

Eh, buick's always have worse wear than that, after all it's steel vs. aluminum. Since you have it out and apart, it's up to you. (can you even get a gasket for that?)

Re: Should I replace the oil pump?

Run the pump but replace the pump drive with an ARP one. #134-7901 The stock ones have a tendency to crack and I've pulled a broken one in the nik of time. It broke in my hand after I removed it! Now, that was lucky.

Make sure the gears have 0.0025" clearance and your set to go. (Plastigage will do, but a depth gauge is much easier.)
You can use wet & dry sand paper on a sheet of glass (or something really flat) to either open up the clearance by sanding the gears, or close it up by sanding the pump body. Use kerosene with the wet & dry. ;)

I have a Moroso pump drive.

                          Thanks for the advice guys.
