I have never taken an engine apart and put it back together and it ran.

The official Bangshift garage door guru. Just about anything can be built using garage door parts, trust me.

Re: What was the first engine you took apart?

When I was 12 my buddy started racing flat track with his 250MX Yamaha. We took the motor apart and ported it and modded the pistons. That thing was fast.

In small engine class in 9th grade, a required class before auto shop, We got brand new 5hp briggs and stratton engines. We had to take them apart and reassemble them. Half the guys couldn't get theirs to start. I reground my cam. I ended up being the teachers helper 'cause it all seemed so obvious to me.

The same buddy that races his bike was a couple years older then me. He got a 65 mustang that we did a bunch af work to.

I cheated. I copied my post from another thread.

A 350 chevy in autotech. It was a blast, such an experience. Not to hijack the thread, but that kind of hands on experience is slowly disappearing from our schools.

You're right. I know a 16 year old kid thats taking autoshop in school. He says all they teach is new cars. Nothing about rebuilding engines, carbs, or any of the hotrod stuff he likes.

A Briggs & Stratton for my grandmothers rototiller was the first engine I took apart
and rebuilt (and it started up on the third pull). I helped change parts on cars before
but that was the first tear down! It was for my Power Mechanics class!

Lifter replacement in my Skylark's 231 V-6 when I was 15, then an in car rod and main bearings and head gaskets (and lifters again) when I was 16.
                Escaped on a technicality.

The first one was an 84 Ford Escort 4 banger and the second was a 305 Chevy. Both were in the last two years. Actually i my first was a Briggs and Straton motor. I can now assemble one in 25 minutes..... not that anyone cares

It was that crappy 267 VB in my 1980 Olds Cutlass Supream....It was such a dog, I tore all the emission stuff off, cleaned the heads, carb and intake of the worst carbon build up you have ever seen and it ran like a little raped ape...till the head gaskes blew...again....
