  • Driving at Bonneville

I helped my buddy today replace his stove. He's been a Bonneville 200 M.P.H. Club member since the 1970'S. As I left he gave me something he recently wrote. He's not a writer and doesn't know I'm posting this but thought I'd share it.

"Bonneville is a straight line. Not that interesting I thought. Driving a car there becomes very interesting. The more horsepower the better.
How many people drive sideways a certain amount for not a quarter mile, but for MILES? They say traction on salt is 50 percent of asphalt at best.
It's a balancing act of horsepower and traction against the wind. As the scale tips, the car and you rotate, your eyes being the center of rotation, still fixed unmoviging straight ahead, like the needle of a compass. It's you and the motor as one, but you better not screw up."

    Re: Driving at Bonneville

Kind of hard to discribe the actual balancing act... lots of folks talk about driving with an egg under thier right foot... seems to keep them from trying to mash the Loud pedal to hard or to early...

Once the car is hooked up and the motor is doing it's thing... it really is magical...

That of course assumes your not hooked up with Freiburger ... seems like we can never quite hook up the power he brings to the table... if you come to the open house... you should get one of us to tell you about the physic's of BB's....

      Re: Driving at Bonneville

I agree with Keith. Why? I have NO FREEKING CHANCE of getting to Bonneville, at least in this lifetime. Driving at Maxton, I assume, is a very different experience. We have fairly good traction, and the track will be pretty smooth next year. Still, even at 100, everything is happening pretty suddenly at the big end. I'm hoping for 150 by the end of the year, and we'll see what that's like.

Love the descriptions of the feeling from both REAL participants.
