  • Hey Hillbilly Sailor........GI Bill Info?

Though I'd run this by you since you're closer to this than I am.
I was watching the Military Channel and they mentioned congress
is considering allowing GI Bill benefits transfer to children.
Do you know if this is would be for current military
or would it cover veterans from the Vietnam period?
Only reason I ask, is I have about 4 semesters of college benefits
remaining and would be cool if I could pass these along to my daughter.
    Thanks for any feedback.

That's something they've talked about for years. I haven't heard when they might actually enact it though. I tlak to the ESO tomorrow and see if he's heard anything.

The transferability of GI Bill educational benefits
only applies to active-duty personnel, under
specific provisions, as a re-enlistment incentive.

          Bro,

GI Bill bennies expire exactly ten years
          following the month/year of discharge.

Any months unused are forfeited at that time.

          Bummer, I know. --

The gi bill is a frickin farce. I did five years got my honorable discharge, In 1998, I Thought hey I have $20,000 (around) for college right? I sign up for college of oceaneering, commercial diving school. It's $16000 a year. No sweat right? Wrong, Only $5280 a year is available so I am paying student loans along side felons attending school on govt. grants. The 10 years are up for me I am back at school and I am paying my own way. You also have to pay into the GI bill for a year or so. The GI Bill is a disgrace period.

Currently there is a plan in works to allow the GI bill to transfer to you family members BUT you will have to chose if before re-enlisting and do another 4 to 5 years for that to happen so say I am eligible to re-enlist in 2009, i can opt to use and/or transfer my bennifits. but some one who is not going to re-enlist cannot...we just had a big briefing on this on tuesday...its a good plan IMO
