  • 300 mph Speeding Ticket

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A-1 Great North Road.
One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office. Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:

"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status, and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed.

    Good Day..."

Didn't Myth-Busters do the one about the Chicken - Cannons ?

Did British train engineers receive help from the FAA about the proper use of a chicken launcher?

The Busters would have a hard time re-creating that one with duct tape and PVC pipes and a rubber dummy and a tattooed young lady who can weld. So, it remins a myth.

I want the electronics package that can identify 'hostile' radar and eliminate that threat. for my ride.

at one time I heard of a guy who wired three microwave oven oscillators to turn on when the indicator light on his escort radar dector went off. I heard that at a short range, it was effective against old k-55 radar guns which had no gain circuitry. I was told in stories that you could actually see the puff of smoke come out of the k-55 when the oscillators fired up... I heard it was quite fun.

Well, it all boils down to what "they" (The military) have, and what "they" let us know about. And I use the term "they" loosely, because "they" are us. The U.S. military.

It outdates most folks here, I'm sure, but years and years ago, during the FIRST war in Iraq, I had to be the most shocked and suprised person in America when they showed the footage of the guided bomb that went into the air conditioning shaft on the roof of a building in Bagdhad and went down seven floors and THEN blew up on the bottom floor of the building. I had NO idea "they" (WE) had anything like that. I was genuinely floored by it.

so you are in effect saying that "we" don't know what "we" have,,,

I dis-agree... I think that "we" has become "us" and "them", even for those in the military...

Well, I don't have a military background. No, I'm not in the know. Will never claim to be.

Was down the the Florida panhandle hanging out with some guys from Hulbert(?) AFB. The home of the AC130's, the cargo plane that got converted into a gunship. They had a 150 mm cannon on the side of that thing that fired .... I dunno ...maybe 10,000 rounds a minute. It sounded for all the world lust exactly like a NASCAR engine when they shot it. When they shot it, it moved the plane sideways in the sky. And they had computers that could triangulate the fire such that they could tear up a very small piece of ground (or a tank, or whatever) from 10,000 feet in the sky with lead bullets.

One evening the sun was going down, just about dusk. They were putting on a display at the airfield for some military brass that was there, so they were firing tracers. They don't need to fire tracers to hit a target, it was just for show. We stood outside and watched it from about 2 miles away. The AC130 hung in the sky and there was an orange streak coming out of it, arcing all the way out of sight to the ground. The orange streak was from the tracer bullets. Of the rounds they were firing, one in every ten was a tracer, so there were 9 lead bullets between them going out at the same time.

And that was....I reckon 17 years ago. So go think...what do WE have now?
