one time I ran a cheap nylon (plastic :P) oil presser
line in my 57 chevy (back in 1989) I was on my way to
a job interveiw at the sears auto service dept. when
it broke off the gauge and filled my right shoe full of
20/50 it was hot and slimey. I found a little pair of vise grips
and plugged the line to fix later. I got the job but the guy
kept trying to find the funny smell in his office, when I
walked threw the store I left oil spots on the floor :o
I replaced the emission air pump on my Mustang with an aftermarket pump eliminator.
Fast forward a couple of years........
Motor started making a NASTY noise that sounded like a rod or two trying to exit the block. I freak out and park the car in the garage for 5 or 6 months while I tried to save up money for a rebuild. I didn't even look into the noise any further, I was just sure it was fatal. Had money finally for a rebuild and started to pull the engine. I pulled the serpentine belt off and the pulley for the pump eliminator fell off onto the floor. The ball bearing in the pulley was junk. That bearing was $4 at the store. Pressed in the new bearing and all was quiet and good. Felt like a idiot that I didn't properly figure out the noise.
Back, when I thought I was smarter than my dad.. I had a 66 pontiac tempest ohc inline 6.. with quite a sludged up engine...
All my friends are in to mustangs.. and always used stp engine flush..
I didn't want to ride bike to parts store, that at the time was 3 miles away.. but did have type f tranny fuild..
drained oil into a clean copper pan (sorry mom ;D ) and refilled engine with half that oil and 3 quarts of type F
run the engine for ten minutes.. and drain out this gear lube looking crude... pull the valve/cam cover.. WOW clean.. nice
. finish oil change.. start car... runs good.. but leaks oil now and burns oil..
only thing that was sealing that engine was the gunk.. and I cleaned it all out..
so now every engine I'm gonna pull and rebuild gets the tranny fluid oil change /run before I start pulling it apart, if it runs..
engines are always nice and clean inside..
