  • How many eniges have you destroyed/how

I was thinking about this...and was supprised by the number of engines I trashed,,,I am sure my list isnt anything like some of you old timers.....

Pontiac 301...had coolant leak and warped heads
Buick V6 something or other in an 80 Skylark...it just mande some squeeky sounds and stopped
Chevy 250 .... it had a hard life as a farm truck...I killed it....
Ford 200....ran without oil....they dont like that
Olds 350..blown head gasket, tossed 2 rods
Chevy 350, lost oil press....totaly seized that thing....it was ugly when I tore it down
Olds 260....ran low on coolant, blew head gasket
    Olds 260....Seized engine
Ford 400M....Went BOOMB, never tried to figure it out
    Plymouth 383....Spun bearings
    Chevy 350...spun bearings

Didn't destroy any, one had a slight knock when I pulled it to put in another engine, didn't spin the rod bearing but it was hammered a bit.

Buick 3.8 S/C V6: A combination of 150,000 hard miles, chunks of supercharger down the inlet and (no kidding) an 11-lb rat in the serpentine belt, locking it all up

Chrysler 360: Water leak from unknown origin flooded two cylinders, rusting them

Olds 265 V8: Water jacket in head cracked, hosed down the left bank of the engine.

Chevy 4.8L V6: got to work, told supervisor that the work truck engine needed oil, supervisor yelled "Get back to that field and get back to work." Engine showed its true colours by going out in a blaze of glory as I coasted to a stop right in front of the big boss.

Numerous Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engines: Early '90s HRM articles made it sound so easy to shave your cylinder head to increase compression and make power. No one told my 11 year old self it can't be done with a 4" angle grinder.

90 to 100 mph for 10 miles in a company owned '83 Honda Civic wagon that had 275,000 miles on it.

403 Olds, $200 beater needed oil so I dropped in a quart of 90 weight. Good oil pressure for a while. Died shortly after.

I bet locale would really be interesting to add to answers..

            my own kills were common.

a 1983 ford escort, this was the most violent. the rod broke the block, and something else smashed up the head to the point of a bent valve cover. The head warped, took bolts right out of the block. rumored magnesium explosion. I could swear out loud today at such the pansiness..and danger of chemistry..

the v8s, twice a chevy, #1 rod, again right out through the block. Some claimed it to be a maine thing (50 degrees to 0 in 24 hours or whatever else the tough guys could conjure)
alot of engines fail to maine....even tried and true diesels.

2 straight sixes, bent the long way, again, maine to blame.

            I personally blame feminine engineering.

chevy corsica, coasting down a hill, threw a rod..."it was an automatic tough guy, no engine braking..explain that error to me again?"
            (less than 100k miles)

the honda stories, and toyotas and stuff..maine really slaps those feminities into thier places...play with lack of steel here and step up with a reputation. you wonlt get a TV commercial grade congrats from anyone.

of course thats like the infamous story of city gangsta boy moving to the country..quite similar to the foriegn cars...how tough were you again?

Re: How many eniges have you destroyed/how

Never had a booboo engine in any street car I have ever owned. It wasn't until I went racing that those things started happening.

Very first one was an injected 402 big block Chevy in a front engine dragster. Spun a rod bearing at the track. (37 years ago!)

Then it was time for the present car with a 406 small block. Lost a connecting rod at the finish line and completely destroyed that engine. Cause = Too much of one thing, and not enough of the other.

The new and improved replacement for the 406, 707" Donavan, met with catastrophic failure one Sunday back in 2006. A tiny speck of dirt plugged a fuel nozzle and burnt a piston. Normally this just makes what I call "Death Smoke", not this time. The oil that followed two connecting rods out of the block, ignited, and turned the Death Smoke into a big ball of fire. The end result was $80K worth of aluminum art turned into a big paperweight.

After replacing the engine with a brand new one, we went another 3 years before the next mishap. Cause = Burnt push rod, closed intake, next cylinder ingested too much charge and not only burnt the piston but took the sleeve with it.

All of the broken parts, with the exception of the blocks, are hanging from my "Ceiling Of Shame" in the garage.

buick v6... lost brakes and car went through stop sign and under the middle of a construction rig that was full rocks..
the rear axles just rolled over the nose of the car.. and that was the end..

yugo, this one is funny, i bought the car for $200 i drove it for about a week, ran real great then all of a sudden BOOM, lost a rod, sold it to a friend, he parted it out, it seems when he pulled the motor someone had lost a rod before, their fix? cover it with cheesecloth and bondo, take out the pushrods and all is well lol. he said the hole was big enough to throw a cat through.

                    1. '86 Hyundai in high school... not designed to do 104mph downhill (with tailwind!) for extended periods. Burnt valve. Poor thing, that happened a couple times. Dad NOT happy.

1B. Same car: next valve; Again, not designed to do redline burnouts in snow in reverse for extended periods. (we were stealin' lawn ornaments, and my buddy was trying to escape... I was the getaway car, spraying him with snow as he was screaming "c'mon! Wait! Don't leave me here dammit!!" I was funny as hell, until the engine started coughing.

1C. Same poor damn Hyundai. All was good until I coasted into the gas station and it locked up. Oil plug leak. NOT my fault DAD!!! That same gas station had done the last oil change the previous day. No idiot light.

                    2. '84 S-10 Blazer, 4 cyl: a Litttle tooooo much redline doing dirt donuts in a field one night. Timing chain let go. Death smoke.

2A. Same Blazer. New head, new timing chain that Dad & I installed in 20-degree weather outdoors. We did something slightly incorrect, as the head gasket let go on the next redline donut session. Again, DAD NOT HAPPY.

                      Oh, and........

                      3. The 4.2L Jeep I-6 that ingested an airfilter wing nut. It got indigestion.

That indigestion led to an intestinal blockage, and a rod through the side of the block. Which led to a Chevy 350.

3A. That same junkyard 350 ran great for a couple years of four wheelin'... Power was kinda waaaay down, so I did a compression check... less than 75 psi on all 8. No good. WHYYYY???? Because I never installed the intake manifold plug behind the carb... ran for 3 frickin' years with a huge vacuum leak and suckin' in all kinds of dirt/mud/cactus debris.
Nice. WHOOPS. Piston rings NOT happy.

Re: How many eniges have you destroyed/how

Let's see - had a 2.3 liter Pinto motor that wore a hole through the cylinder wall with the piston.
It hydrauliced badly when it started sucking coolant through the hole.

Then there was the Mazda four banger I let run low on oil, and spun a bearing.
                        Burned the crank journal.

Haven't wasted anything else that I can think of.

Boxer finaly raised a good point....Location would be interesting....I have a pretty long list but mine were all 1 billion mile scrap yard bound 200 dollar western PA beaters....Except the 383, that one was my own fault..I knew oil pressure was low but had no choice but to drive it...that made me sad...

I destroyed the crank and some rods in my Buick 455 trying to do just a re-ring, re-bearing and new gasket's rebuild. It gave me maybe 100 miles :-\ New crank, some new rods and a Machine shop and it's in the Skylark again.

The original 231 that came in the Skylark would not die. Ran for tens of thousands of miles where the oil pressure never got above 20 psi when warmed up. I regularly drove that car from Ely to So. Cal. and back (1,000+ miles each trip) like that. Climbing the hill outside of Baker in 110*+F weather the coolant would be near maxing the gauge out, the engine screaming in protest at 4,000+rpm climbing the mountain side and oil pressure around 5psi. It just wouldn't go. Multiple oil pressure gauges proved to me it was the actual oil pressure, and that was at the pump :o
                            Escaped on a technicality.

First one I blew was a '72 351 Cleveland mildly built. Got stuck in a snow drift and had my girlfriend drive while I pushed. She hit the throttle and held it. I didn't get to the car quick enough to tell her to let off, had headers and mufflers but no pipes so she didn't hear me screaming. The sound of that rod hitting the pan made me cry. :'(
Busted a ring in the 340 Dart and replaced it with a 360. Never did figure out why.
Snapped a cam in a 302 Ford pickup that was loaded with shingles, about 3000 lbs worth in a half ton truck with the front tires barely on the ground. ;D
Spun a bearing in the next Ford truck bought to replace the one with the busted cam, also a 302. Rebuilt that one then sold it when the tranny went.
Spun a bearing in the full size van we had bought for the wheel chair lift for my daughter. It was a 351W Ford.
Hmmm....I see a trend here, maybe that's why I drive Chevys now. ;D I have yet to blow one of them.
