  • Jeff Beck is the man

I love his stances on things
At 65, Jeff Beck remains the greatest guitarist that millions of people have never heard of, but he has resisted making concessions that would allow him to be heard more widely.

Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

Jeff has RULED the fretboard since the 60's.
First saw him live with Beck, Bogert, and Appice WAY back in the day.
When his new CD comes out, I'll have to get it.

Mr. Beck is wildly talented, for sure. I had the privilege of seeing him and Stevie Ray in a concert and SRV frankly cut Jeff's head. As a finale they came out and did "Goin' Down" together. Jeff opened it and played thru a couple of verses. Stevie Ray took over and the superiority was clear - even Jeff Beck held out his hand and turned the stage over.

Now I'm gonna get flaming responses. To be fair, Beck has a much broader range than Stevie had and has been doing it longer. He deserves greatest respect and has it from me. What I'm saying is that on that particular night SRV was clearly better - on that tune.

Dan, I saw them on the same tour together, but in Milwaukee. I had never seen either in concert before, and really wasn't familiar with Jeff Beck at all at the time. But I definitely agree with you; SRV absolutely rocked and completely overshadowed Jeff Beck. The concert left me wondering why SRV would have chosen Jeff to tour with. The old stadium in Milwaukee seemed to have been made of stone or something similar, and they literally rocked the house. It was rumbling, quaking and shaking, like an earthquake. And not due merely to the sound level, but because the music was so damn good.

All I can really say is that I can't play worth a shit myself, so how can I be a critic to start with?

But I'll be one anyway. I'll say that Jeff Beck is in a league by himself, beacuse I don't understand what he plays. What he plays doesn't talk to me. Therefore, I do not understand. Definitely in a league by himself in that regard..

But I do have to say, during Eric Clapton's benefit Guitar Army Concert, or whatever it was called, Beck had the hottest young chick playing bass who ever lived, and she was better than any of them, Beck included. She was sensational. 23 years old or something. Hot. Damn hot. And better than the rest of the band. They shoulda never given her a bass solo, because she stole the show.

              I agree.
it seems uniform more than pioneering. even SRV was in a labeled blues following. I did have lessons as a kid, and they were not fun...that lack of fun no doubt makes pioneers...who work to reach many. there is an extreme selfish with guitar. I despise it.

In the article he enjoys his privacy...at least he is humble that way.

That would be this young lady:

Jeff Beck (12 songs, 51m 42s; w Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) + Tal Wilkenfeld (bass)

                    Tal Wilkenfeld

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.

She's amazing. Almost as good as The Ox (John Entwhistle). Listen to "My Generation" on a good sound system - he's amazing. I always wanted to be a good bass player - never made it.

Ok Dan, we were looking at the ages of rock stars last night. Many are well into their 60s and still putting out new, good stuff. Get out in the music room and start practicing. You still have time.

With the arthritis in my thumbs and a lack of incentive to practice I probably will remain in obscurity. Besides, who wants to deal with the paparazzi ? PITA. And all that pesky money.

Dan, I made upwards of a few hundred dollars doing it with my 10 thousand dollars' worth of instruments and sound equipment and lights.

But that's not what it's about. To play a small joint with 8 or 10 drunks absolutely enthralled with what you are doing, mezmerized by it, now that's fun.

But that's not what actually happens. They're all too busy drinking and talking to care about the music so you might as well not be there anyway.

But there is an up-side. My SC buddy and I took our acoustic show to a restaurant/music place several times in a row, and he made a keen observation one night after we were done. He said, "They feed us a free meal. They give us free beer. They LET us play. And then at the end of the night, they HAND us MONEY! Is this a great country or WHAT???"

Yeah, that ain't all bad. I don't care if anybody listened or not.
