  • Yeah, but VW's Got a New One

I've already proven here that my MO is that I either entirely believe in something that's wrong, or I strongly disbelieve something that's true.

Here's another one - got it on email today. This time, I have a real problem with a one-cylinder diesel engine, but I'll leave it up to you authorities to sort out:

Volkswagen's $600 car gets 258 mpg -- It looks like Ford, Chrysler and GM missed the boat again!

China launches $600 car that will get 258 mpg

This $600 car is no toy and is ready to be released in China next year.

The single seater aero car totes VW (Volkswagen) branding.

Volkswagen did a lot of very highly protected testing of this car in Germany, but it was not announced until now where the car would make it's first appearance.

The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most economical car in the world is presented.

The initial objective of the prototype was to prove that 1 liter of fuel could deliver 100 kilos of travel.

    Spartan interior doesn't sacrifice safety

The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result. The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.

The power plant is a one cylinder diesel positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior.

Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to the GT racing cars.

    $600 car gets 258 mpg

The Most Economic Car in the World will be on sale next year:

Better than Electric Car 258 miles/gallon: IPO 2010 in Shanghai

This is a single seated car

From conception to production: 3 years and the company is headquartered in Hamburg , Germany ..

Will be selling for 4000 yuan, equivalent to US$600..

Gas tank capacity = 1.7 gallons

    Speed = 62  74.6 Miles/hour

    Fuel efficiency = 258 miles/gallon

Travel distance with a full tank = 404 miles

Now that's what I'd call a Smart Car. Sort of reminds me of the Messerschmidt car produced from plane parts after WWII.

Re: Yeah, but VW's Got a New One

            Seriously...I would almost drive it.
But then, you would have to talk to Banks about a turbo; maybe see about running a 4" pipe and a bullydog tuner.
On the plus side, you could go to lunch, get some used veg oil, and have a eco-grease car.

1 cyl diesel commuter? yawn... (just not my cup of tea, in all honesty I'd rather drive a big ol truck with tons of personality, but gets 8mpg...)

The thing that gets me is that it is tagged at $600 US.... If that's true then everyone else in the world is getting bent over and f^#($d cause there is no way the materials would cost less than $600 anywhere else...

Why would I say that ? I didnt even infer that, and you know people are gonna use that turd to drive to work like a car.
You ever drive in NY rush hour traffic on a winter night ? On the thruway? You will die in that thing.

                      vw 1 cyl diesel.

I'd put a boxer engine in it and call it normal. ;D

it is not aggressive enough for real use highway, but local, heck, I was even interested in a street legal golf cart.

Yeah, that part got me, too. Being as ignorant as I am about technical things, I'dda thought a carbon fiber ink pen would cost $600 to build, let alone a car with an engine.

I posted it, but I really think it's a hoax. I sure don't know. Got no idea.

It's not going to be $600, I don't think there is a concrete release date. I would be surprised if this sells for a dime under 20k.

I hear ya, Anthony. I didn't mean to imply that I ever wanted to be caught dead in one, but that this car seems a heck of a lot better than the Smart Car, with really high gas mileage. I can see some limited function for a go-cart like this, in a big city where parking is tight, for example. But it would be taking your life into your own hands.
