So I'm planning on going to the track Saturday, it is 80 miles away
I have a goal, 20 mpg and 12's (20.0001 and 12.999 would be fine by me)

that is my goal, now here is what I have:

    the car in my avatar.

motor is a salvage 99 suburban 350 vortec.
I ported the heads (no bench), lapped the valves by hand
    got a regrind 230* - 480" hyd roller
Q-jet carb with edelbrock high flow needle and seat
    air-gap intake with carb adapter
    factory exhaust manifolds
HEI locked out at 36* or so
(if not mentioned it's all gm right down to the gaskets)

    transmission is a 700r4 with v6 s10 converter stalls 2300
gears are stock, which I was told were 3.07 when I bought the car but afterwards I read that only manuals had 3.07's mine is a 2.79 dana 36 auto car...
rear tires are toyo proxis 275 45 16's (smaller than the cooper cobra 255-50-16's, why?)

so that is my goal and what I have... (aftermarket parts: regrind cam, airgap intake, carb adapter, needle+seat, tires)

will I get my 20 MPG goal? what do you predict my mileage at?
will I run my 12's? what is your et prediction?
will I break the dana 36 (or something else?)

I'm taking the safe bet...I see your MPG numbers somewhere around 17-18 MPG, an ET close to 13.1.

Don't use me as a good barometer, though, I'm guessing based on what I see, not by experience.
    Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

Mileage, you're gonna get the 20mpg

      ET -- I'm saying 13.5's

      Good luck and have fun!

Well the only thing I know for sure is if you're driving to the track Saturday and there was no mention of Snowmobiles then you live in a warmer climate then I do! I was going to go with 13.5 but Brian already beat me to the punch so I'll go with 13.6 and hope you get closer to the 12's then that. I'm trying to think how you're going to figure fuel mileage, you surely won't fillup when you get to the track and if you're figuring round trip you'll have your passes that figure into that so I'll go with 15 mpg.

Re: cookie for the closest guess

Im gonna be the pessimist and go with mid teens on mileage and barely cracking the 13s in the 1/4. Now that would all change if you stuffed an LS1/LS6 in there, then 11s and 26mpg would be easy.

I got a real nice video of a Vette like that at the track vs a mild little Pontiac...

Old Ugly lined up with a C4 Vette, apparently he was stock, obviously Ugly isnt. This was in 2002 at Cooper River Dragway in South Carolina.

But good luck man, it would be cool if you could do it.

20 on a qjet. small first barrells, heads with clean ports...

I went kinda nerdy wth ecomod stuff, and increasing diamater of tires etc on my own buggy.

yours is 2000 rpm at 78 mph.

20.1 not only achievable, I could guess closer to 30mpg.

here is the calc stuff for your car
            tire 25.7 inch diameter
tall gear on 700r4 is .7 to 1 (deep like a diesel)
the diff gear is very tall at 2.79
2000 rpm calced to be 78.3 mph

the calc is dead on, it matched a speeding ticket I got while had broken speedometer.

oh, the track times... given a 3 speed run... somewhere in 13s.

              13.70's @ 104mph-22mpg with passes.

I don't think it will 60' any better than a 2.0-needs to be better to get in the 12's at that power level. Might have to run it through in second with the motor hanging it's tongue out a bit.

It's awesome that you get to go to the track this early, and I'm jealous that you have a Vette!

                we will see...

btw it must have the 3.07's like I was told, instead of like i read.
I'm taching 18-1900 @ 70 and shifted out of drive at 145mph, 5900 rpm or so

but the speedo is in question, I was pulled over for 73 in a 55, speedo recall said 58 mph top speed?
I have NOT been pulled over since then and continued to run by the speedo, so I do think it is correct, i also had another local cop (not a stater) pace me, he said it was spot on..... so maybe 3.07's...

can't believe nobody is calling for a 12 .... we will find how good I tune by the seat of my pants (no o2 sensor, no timing light (36* is a guess), how good i port with no flow bench, and how good I drive.... don't be surprised if I show up sunday morning with a 12.7 time slip.... or don't show at all b/c I broke the diff 80 miles from home :P

                  20.7mpg
                  and 13.4
short sidewall will kill the 60 foot..
the reargears won't matter much with the 700r4's low first..
you don't say if you've done anything to the 700r4.. to make it hold a gear untill you shift.. or not..
what the car weight... 34-35 hundred lb?

Re: cookie for the closest guess

21.5 MPG and I'll venture out on a limb and go with a 12.9 in the quarter. Everyone else is a bunch of naysayers :D

                      Hmmm..

                      18 mpg
                      14.10 ET (or slower)

                      Here's why:

                      Stock, restrictive exhaust.
Weight. These cars are not light.
3.07 gears are not conducive to getting off the line.
Those tires are not going to hook like you want.
