The whole deal for going down to Maxton this summer just got a whole lot more complicated. Mom has expressed an interest in going, and I have no real objections to it except that it makes my life a whole lot more complicated. Mainly, it means that we need to bring along another car, since if Mom comes, the dog has to come, and since the dog is coming, there isn't going to be room in the Escort for everything, not that Mom would ride for 30+ hours in the Escort anyway. So that brings me to my next question. Is that second vehicle a tow rig or a support vehicle? Dad's truck would deliver right around 12 mpg towing the Escort, and would run me right around $500 for fuel costs, probably split two ways with Mom. Driving the Escort down and having Mom drive down seperately would run right around $480, with me probably only having to pick up the $180 for the Escort. Is it worth the extra cost to tow the car down and be able to split drivers?

but for an extra 20 buck to be able to get the car home if it breaks..
As a whole, I don't think most of them will behave like that.

Re: Trailer vs. Support Vehicle
Bring Mom. We're a pretty decent lot and she'll be treated with respect (we'll have to train Keith but it CAN be done - Tonya handles that). My Mom is almost 90 and we know we won't have her forever. Every memory is precious and this promises to be a good one. Besides, if we get her hooked maybe SHE'LL pay the next time!
See y'all there -

Re: Trailer vs. Support Vehicle
complete no brainer, drive the truck with the 'scort on the trailer.
Obviously give the truck a good top to bottom once over before the trip, and make sure you have a real floor jack and jack stand, as well as a good spare for both the truck and the trailer before leaving.
Slower speeds with the trailer in tow will help the fuel economy immensely - so take that into account. I think 12 is a reasonable estimate, but if you hit high winds or try running 75-80, you won't make that. If you set the cruise at 65 or so - you might do better than 12 in the flat country.
Sounds like a great trip. The truck lets you bring more support gear / tools / supplies as well, never a bad thing. There's always something new to learn.
