I trekked to see several shuttle launches in my younger years. It is an awesome spectacle. Just plumb amazing and dumbfounding, really to see (and hear) in person. Got to watch Challenger from a boat on the water when Sally Ride took her ride into space, we were REAL close to the launch pad by today's standards. Thunder doesn't describe it.

But now I'm old, and...that white trail of magnesium oxide the solid boosters leave behind? It's not quite smoke and it sure ain't a "cloud." It hangs there in the sky for a real long time after the show is over. And imagine every single particle that makes up that white trail that can be seen hundreds of miles away...imagine every particle in that trail was a hundred bill. Yep, there goes the shuttle again.

This always makes me feel proud and awestruck.
Space Shuttle Atlantis liftoff from my front yard.
You can't really see them, but there was a group of skydivers up at the exact time to watch from their canopies ...
    ;D
