  • Paint or shoe polish?

I am debating whether to paint my number on the Escort or just to shoe polish it on when I get there. Are racing numbers on a street car a violation? I was thinking about 8" tall on the door panel in the same red as on the top of the car. The number is 9301 if it makes a difference. I have all the painting supplies I need, so I can do it basically for free if I want to. Any thoughts?

Personally, I don't see a problem with doing so,
but must admit, I am unclear of the legalities of the issue.

I would do it, as long as no infractions were committed and if it caused no legal repercussions or financial consequences.

Not such a great idea in my opinion. The NH and Ma state troopers bust the balls of guys leaving the drag strip who leave their numbers on. Rightly or wrongly, it is going to draw more attention to you.

Just shoe polish it on. It's cooler any way.

I agree with Brian. The number for some cops is like a bulls eye. Like he said right or wrong it still happens. There is no need to attract excess attention.

I wasn't thinking about legal issues, but what would be bad about racing numbers? You have to understand, 95% of the time I drive like an old lady. I know most of the local cops and they know me, and I have never been pulled over. And to the absolute best of my ability, I never have any equipment violations and I never have anything hanging from my rearview. I am just wondering from a taste standpoint whether or not racing numbers on a 1982 Escort is a bad thing. Even if the are actually real racing numbers, and not just a juvenile fantasy. Since I will not be driving the Escort after July, I am thinking I may just as well paint them on. Plus I like the clean look of painted numbers as opposed to chalked on the windows.

Are you actually racing it? Then @#$! everyone else and paint the numbers on. Badge of honor.

make a stencil out of cardboard (thin & waxy if possible) and then use the shoe polish - white block number(s) edged with black - best of both worlds

A different option. I go to local craft store (like Michael's, etc. - ask Mom) and get a sheet of transfer letters and numbers in a contrasting color. I'm using 6" and they seem to show up well so the tower can read them. They don't hold up well to weather but don't have to as you'll be removing them after racing anyhow. They're cheap and look professional - how do you beat that?

                        Works for me.

The Ma and NH state troopers write tickets citing the numbers are obstructing the view of the driver. Then they go ahead and write every violation on the car up they can find.

On the flip side, I guess I don't see the point of painting the numbers on the window, but hey, it's not my car!

Should be legal to have the numbers on the quarter and rear windows, but not on the windshield or front door windows.

                            I've never had a problem.

Shoe polish is fine, no need to go wild over numbers

Yeah... no need to make black velvet numbers and velcro them on.
