What do you think about rallying? Specifically domestic rallying?

This is diffferent from the usual drag race discussions. Rallying is road racing with cajones. Let the opinions rain in..... ;D

        Re: Rallying

I think it's cool just on the danger aspect. Hitting a wall at speed is one thing, burying your face into an oak at 100+ is a different level of nuts.

I think it is different than desert racing because you are on a "track" per se and there is far more shit to hit.

The Maine rally is a good take. Did that a couple years during my collegiate experience.

              Re: Rallying

              I have answered this before..deja vu. :

rally is the sport for cars. live axles become stupid. jacked up even dumber. Turbos was a real surprise to see emerge like they have.

I started off on north central maine. 40 acres had our own 6/10 mile road... some small hills, on a turn, alot to learn.

of course on my own, before net, TV in usa with rally.. I figured out what had advantages. my favorite was a chevette..the axle sucked however. a delta88 with a broken frame did good.. maybe it was the slinky broken back effect adding to a fake independent suspension. ;D

then the abandoned railroad bed, one lane bridge.. 3400 pound monte ss, or little ford escort... they all slid around on the pebbles. 50s 60s tops.

the sube of the 80s is my champion. there is still a slide.. but its a devil..it don't go far. Keep the turbo. :

about the only way I stopped funning at little cars is when little roads seemed to be all around me. FWD sucks too.. that is as surprising as turbos emerging like they did.(most of my rides have been american v8)

what the danger of hitting some fool on the side of the track,,
this type of racing is about as safe as street racing..'
                  people lining the whole route..
and the oak is a safer bet as you got less chance of a train load of cars hitting you after you hit the tree unlike when you hit a wall..

Rally is my favorite kind of racing.

Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

If I EVER get the kind of money to front a team, bet your ass I'm getting a late-90's Impreza 2.5RS and caging it...since Brian bought the Javelin... :P

                        Re: Rallying

Us domestic rallying does not have a large spectator base. If you find 75 people spectating at any one point in the event you would be lucky. The organizations that sanction rallys in the US control the spectators to the point boredom at some events.
I was involved in Pro Rally at the divisional level when the SCCA(secret car club of america) had control. I raced, I worked events and organized events.
On a track(road race) you get many chances to get it right. On a rally you might get a second chance at a stage after 40 cars have torn it up. It is now a completely different stage. Or you might get to do the stage backwards. It is dangerous. Severe drop offs here in Colorado have taken a few cars. Some have been lucky to be caught by a tree before going all the way to the bottom.
Yes there are mostly import in events but there are some Escorts, Neons and an ocasional 5 liter Mustang running.
Trucks run too, google Bill Holmes to see his rally truck. I ran a RWD 401 Gremlin for a few years then a 390 V8 AMC SX/4 AWD.
We took the Gremlin to the Power Tour this year. It survived the 3500 mile round trip from Denver to Denver.
My rally partner and I are Hot Rodders. We would love to build a new RWD rally car and hit the Pro Rally Circus again if we win the lottery.

Rally can be done in many forms... There is the extreme as posted about, but there are road rallies you can do...

There is also rally cross that can be found in many parts of the country...

I think it is one of the ultimate tests of machine and man...

Time distance rally is cool in a tour kind of way. We did a couple in my dad's 1964 GTO when I was a kid and had a blast. It was a fun way to use the car, hang out with the family, and see some nice stuff. "Making up time" due to directional mistakes was my favorite part (and I suspect dad's too!)

I'd do a rally in Big Bri's Javelin any day. It'd be a blast hauling butt down dirt roads and back country trails. Any chance to get away with fun type driving I'd go to jail otherwise would be mucho funno. I don't think I'd do well as a passenger.
