All of those suffer from an incurable ailment
    front wheel drive

Though really, I haven't heard anything bad about them
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

      ignition switches
p0300 caused by slightly bent valves - failing leak down test
      stretched timing chains
      cvt - yuk
lwr control arm bushings pulling out
      not a bad car really

        Re: Saturn Ion

Like I mentioned, this one has a 5 speed and three pedals so I get to avoid all the crap about the CVT. It's a frigging jellybean, but from the add and the pictures, it seems to be a decent car.

Well, we looked at it and it seems to be a decent car. There is a 2007 Cobalt similarly equipped, and for the same price that we are considering also. Both are 5 speeds, but the Cobalt has new tires, allow wheels, and 30,000 left on the powertrain warranty. The Cobalt runs about $400 more a year to insure, though, but it is in better shape. Since we have six weeks though, we are going to keep looking for awhile.

                    Re: Saturn Ion

So, whatever I end up getting will be heavily financed from Mom and Dad. One condition of such assistance is that I am not allowed to make any modifications to said vehicle. Now, I am not saying that I will go against Mom and Dad, but I am trying to think of ways you could bump the performance of a vehicle in such a manner that it would be absolutely stock appearing and sounding, with the possibility of being able to dial it back to normal so that nothing seems amiss to another driver. Like I said, this is more just a mental exercise than anything else. How would you do it?

It's more of a golly gee wiz thought than anything else. Also, remember that that the stock Ion is faster than my worked over Escort.

Hey man, there are LOTS of LSR guys who race shit that is far slower than their DD. I'm with Jim and Joe on this one. Don't bother with the Saturn. Drive it for what it is....save the cashola so the 'Scort can be upgraded.

I have been eyeballing a newer Cobalt. I like the idea of a 2-door coupe. My Neon is a 2-dr, but gaaaaawwwd... it is tired, tired and tired. I think it needs an upgrade to V-8 power and correct wheel drive.
