    Re: Saturn Ion

*cough* hidden nitrous *cough* ;D Also hotter cams, chip, performance clutch, lightweight flywheel, stroker crank, bored block, ported heads, gutted cat, underdrive pulleys,
Don't risk it, though. The folks are helping you out, don't screw them over. It's not worth it on many levels. Nothing wrong with a little mental excersize. Keeps the grey matter nimble!

      Re: Saturn Ion

This is all theoretical. We don't know of the Saturn is what I will end up with, it is just an option at this point. And I really kind of want a car that doesn't have a starting procedure, that has a gas gauge that works, has a radio, and can seat more than two people. Also, one where taking it farther than 100 miles doesn't require a major inspection of all critical systems would be nice. I may see if I can swing a better wheel/tire package and maybe some other minor tweaks, but I wouldn't do anything without Dad's go ahead. My mind has just been working on how you would take a normal fwd 4 cylinder and tweak it in such a way that when you popped the hood or listened to the engine there was absolutely nothing that would make you think that it could move out. I am thinking, bigger injectors, bigger throttle body, worked over ECU, extrude honed exhaust manifold, gutted cat, stronger coilpacks, and if you could plumb it to look stock hide the bottles well enough, maybe wire in a 50 shot that is triggered by a hidden button.

        Re: Saturn Ion

Not familiar enough with FWD transmissions to know about switching out the final drive, but that could be worth looking into. Lightening wherever possible would be another route to go. Take a trick from the Factory Appearing Stock Tire guys and hide a lightweight motorcycle battery in a gutted stock shell. Painted stock looking fiberglass or carbon fiber body panels. And what's this 50 shot BS?! Have you learned nothing on here?! Go for 100+ or don't bother! ;D Horn or cruise control buttons work very well for hidden nitrous systems, btw. Hide a shift light behind an idiot light face on the dash for a juiced up motor...

You just couldn't drive in DC or Boston. Every time you had to let the IDIOT that did something (or everything) stupid know you were there you would plow into them. Because you forgot the horn button was upgraded. I am only saying this to deter you from going to DC or Boston. Not to stop the whole nitrous idea.

BTW To achieve better mileage a free flowing exhaust and intake. At least that's the argument I would use.

Well I have stopped buying stuff for cars I don't own. Is that a step in the right or wrong direction?

eh, you wouldn't need bigger injectors until you got past the baby mods. I'd spend some time looking at Ecotec sites for mods that are proven to pick up power. For example, it might not need an exhaust upgrade until you've added another 150hp.

Nitrous is going to be your best bet. Dry shots are a lot easier to conceal than a wet system, though. At which point you'll need to do some ECU tweaking.

Best advice is probably just leave it alone, and learn your lesson about modding cars that are expected to be reliable drivers.

I keep repeating this, but it should be mentioned again here. An older, wiser tuner once told me: "Whenever someone tried to build a fast street car, they always end up with a slow race car"

My advice: Save the fun for the escort. Quit dicking around with N/A stuff that gains you almost nothing, and step it up to forced induction if you really want to get some value for your dollar! Especially since you can run EFI on that motor, it's an inliner so a turbo system is EASY to install and tune. Get yourself a front mount ebay intercooler, and any one of a number of OEM turbos will turn that engine up to 300hp, maybe even with stock internals, and then you won't be asking if you can beat wheezing 1970's era Novas. instead you'll be beating up on vipers and vettes :-)

tacking together intake plumbing requires a $99 harbor freight flux core welder. And about 13 seconds of instructions.

The kid doesn't need $90,000 in snap on tools wasting away in his drawers to do something impressive.
